We’ve all heard the song, Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof. One sunrise follows another; one sunset does the same. This may continue for many years. Life changes little from day to day, then one becomes old and the biggest change resulting from the passage of the years is that one has gotten older.
What does this mean to you? There is a tendency in life that Sir Isaac Newton defined when he enunciated the principle of inertia. (The word inertia comes from the Latin iners which means idle or lazy.) Inertia is comfortable since it requires no energy. It also seems natural. To you, it may seem natural to live where you live, to do what you do, and to aspire to what you aspire to. Yes, you may realize there is a better life, but you feel it’s for the other person.
Then the monotone of your life is broken one day by a casual comment from another person. It may be spoken directly to you or you may simply overhear it. It may be about an opportunity that is available to persons just like you. It may be about a place to live, a school you might attend, a job you should apply for. The kind of comment it could be is so varied, I can’t list all the possibilities here. A thought strikes your mind. What will you do about it. Hurry, the thought is effervescent. It may last only a few seconds. Was this remark something you should reflect upon? Don’t cast it off like flecks of dust from your coat. Grasp the thought, think about it; make a decision! The casual remark could, for you, represent a life change for the better!
The random comment may not come from a live person. It could be a random event. It could be something you see on television, from a paragraph you read in a magazine, from a phone call. It may not introduce itself to you as being worthy of thought. It will be your responsibility to recognize it as such. It may arrive in disguise. It may seem intended for someone like you but not you! Stop! Think! Is this thought something that you should harken to? If yes, act.
Yes, the comment or event may not have any meaning for you. Your consolation is that you did run it down. The next random comment or event may be more meaningful. If this one was intended for you, follow it through. It could be the idea that you will always back upon as the one that put your life on a better course.
Has this article struck a nerve in your being? Consider, it may be one of those random events that I have referred to above.
