A fatal accident stole Deb’s life, but she wouldn’t let that stop her. During her spirit processing, she hit the “RETURN” button, propelling her and her guardian angel, Fred, back down to Earth.
When Deb awakens, she finds herself in a new body. Definitely not the super-model physique she was accustomed to, but this new body is filled with knowledge- knowledge of the law, that is. Her less-than-successful modelling career is over, but in its place she has gained a successful career at the same law firm as her former fiancee’, Grayson Kent.
Coincidence? I think not, but Deb’s guardian angels say otherwise.
In this new body, Deb pines for the love that used to belong to her. Grayson hasn’t forgotten Deb. Their love was powerful, but now its forbidden. The cost of revealing her true identity? The life of the man she loves. Even as the friendship blossoms between Grayson and Jane, she knows she has to let him go. A world without Grayson Kent, is a world in which she has no desire to be in.
She begins dating Judge Owen French. In him, she finds a place to rest her weary heart. He and Jane are incredibly compatible and make an amazing team. Together they can do great things and their future together holds limitless possibilities… If only she could forget Grayson.
In the season three finale, Jane walks into the office to find Grayson kissing Stacy- her best friend, and the only other person who knows her secret. To say the least she feels betrayed by both. Stacy: for kissing the man that she was once betrothed to and Grayson: for dishonoring Deb’s memory by making a move on her best friend.
Jane doesn’t confront them and doesn’t wait around to see what happens next. However, if she had, she would have seen Stacy pull away from Grayson and tell him that Jane is actually Deb. Instead, Jane rushes to the airport and hops a plane to Italy.
Now there’s a lot of controversy over this scene. By all accounts, Grayson should not be allowed to know the truth. My rationalization: there is a difference between knowing something as fact and suspecting a rumor. This could, however, be the nail in the Jane/Grayson coffin. In season 2, Fred told Jane that the only way she would have a future with Grayson would be if he could learn to love her as just Jane. How can he ever now fall in love with plain Jane when he suspects Deb’s soul could still be alive inside her body?
Anyway, back to the point. Grayson rushes after Jane to stop her from leaving and confirm Stacy’s admission. He’s too late, but Owen- who had planned his own trip to New Zealand- was already at the airport and traded his ticket in for one on the same flight as Jane. With the thought of Grayson’s betrayal fresh in her mind and the absence from his day-to-day presence in her life, Jane is able to give her emotions more freely into the relationship with Owen.
Upon returning to the states, Stacy confesses what actually happened the night Jane fled the country. The knowledge of Grayson’s chase after her was bittersweet because it was Deb he was chasing after and she is no longer that woman.
As season 4 progresses, Grayson tries to prove his suspicions correct. Jane goes out of her way to keep him from the truth, for his own protection. This brings her and Owen even closer, eventually becoming engaged. Still, Grayson won’t let go.
As season 4 comes to a close, Jane and Owen have made it to their wedding day. Jane is obviously having doubts, as she leaves Owen waiting at the alter. Of course it had to be Grayson who would come to “check on” her. He uses this opportunity to tell her how he feels, sending her mind spiraling into a whirlwind of emotions, before kissing her.
Enter Owen. Shock. Horror. Heart attack.
Obviously, Jane feels guilty and season 5 opens with Jane searching for her lost fiancee’. All the while, Grayson is trying to get her to talk to him about what happened between them.
This love triangle is at its crucial peak. Jane stands on the brink of losing both of the men in her life.
Will Owen forgive Jane’s transgression? Or will she realize she’s chasing after him in some sort of displaced loyalty over an already broken promise? If so, will Grayson be around to pick up the pieces or will he have moved on with his life as he was instructed to… Possibly with Old-Jane in her new model body?
Only time can answer these questions, but with the season 5 premiere, Drop Dead Diva feels like its hitting its last season… And fast.
