Finding a healthy dessert option that does not pack on extra calories and sugar can be tough. Dessert menus at restaurants are rendered useless as most of these spare no calories. For those health conscious among us, we are left having to eat less of a good thing whenever we want to quench our sweet tooth. After some research and experimenting at home, I have found dessert alternatives not loaded with the bad stuff.
Cottage Cheese Ice Cream
Eating cottage cheese is a great way to get that ever-so-popular protein into your body. Eaten plain, cottage cheese can have a bitter unsatisfying taste. The texture is strange and the flavor is not the greatest. There is a way to turn this sour substance into something close to ice cream.
First, mix some protein powder in with your cottage cheese. Add a little bit of milk to make the mixture more ‘paste-like.’ Stir it up real good, making sure the protein powder has spread evenly throughout. All you have to do now is place your concoction into the freezer. It only takes an hour or two before your dessert is fully frozen. The cottage cheese will have a more ice cream like texture. With the added taste from the protein powder, you will not just be eating frozen cottage cheese. You can always mix in different fruits or nuts to add something chewy or crunchy into your high protein easy to make frozen treat.
Greek Yogurt Mixes
Regular yogurt is out and Greek yogurt is in. With plenty of flavored options, you can be satisfied easily without having to get too creative in the kitchen. However, there is always a way to improve anything in life, especially dessert. Greek Yogurt is already high in protein, but as any health enthusiast will tell you, it’s hard to get enough. This dessert mix will give you plenty of protein.
Buy some plain Greek yogurt as this has the least amount of added sugar and carbohydrates. Mix in your favorite protein power, whatever the flavor might be. The same with the cottage cheese ice cream, you are free to toss other healthier choices inside to make this more than a creamy treat. Never load up too high on the nuts as these should only be eaten sparingly due to their high fat content. This treat can be frozen or eaten immediately. You can also stick it in a blender to get a more milkshake texture. Greek yogurt, chocolate protein powder, bananas, and peanuts blended together tastes as delicious and complete as any dessert you will find.
High Protein Oatmeal
Oatmeal is not the ideal dessert food, although certain flavors can taste just as good. If treated right, oatmeal can replace cake in your life. Mixing oatmeal with protein powder can be a delicious dessert.
The two best options I have tried are both very simple. The first option is filling a bowl with oatmeal then dumping some protein powder on top. Either mix well or not well at all. This really depends on how much you enjoy the flavor of the protein powder you use. The better you like the taste, the less you probably will have to mix. Add just enough milk where the protein powder will stick with the oatmeal.
The other option you can do that gives this mixture a different experience is to cook your oatmeal as usual and fix your protein shake like you normally would. You can either pour the shake on top of your heated oatmeal or take a spoonful of the oatmeal and dip it into your cold protein shake to enjoy.
Always experiment and always adjust to your needs with these or any other desserts you create. Have fun and live well.
