Even if you don’t have a hot date or you aren’t planning to go out, you still want to look your best for Valentine’s Day. But getting great nails doesn’t mean getting an expensive manicure at the salon. There are easy ways to DIY your nails for the holidays, so you can save money for boxes of chocolate.
Instead of attempting to create fancy designs, use different colors to create a unique manicure. Paint each nail in a different shade: white, red, baby pink, hot pink, red, silver, any Valentine’s Day color you like.
Painting pretty hearts on your nails isn’t as difficult as the final result will look. Start with a base coat in a light pink or dark red shade. Once this is dry, pick a color that’s a few shades darker or lighter than the base coat. Starting on the right side of the nail, paint an arc up the middle to the tip of the nail. The arc should not extend all the way down to the base of the nail. Mirror the arc on the other side of the nail. Use the same color to paint the tip of the nail, filling in the lines. This will leave a heart shape on your nails.
Paint two more arcs on your nail, slightly closer to the tip, in another shade of polish after the first heart is dry. This will create a layered heart look that gives your nails a fancy finish.
You don’t need to cut out an intricate stencil to give your nails a unique look. Just get a small piece of lace. First, paint your nails in a very light or very dark base color. Pale pink with black lace accents, or black with pale pink, looks striking for Valentine’s Day.
Once the base coat is dry, paint the polish onto your piece of lace in an even coat. Press the painted lace directly on the nail to transfer the pattern.
Half n’ Half
Create a simple but fancy nail look by painting one half of each nail pink and the other half red. To keep the mid line crisp, allow one color to dry before painting on the complementing color. This simple Valentine’s Day nail solution doesn’t take much work, but the end result is colorful and eye-catching. If your mid line does get messy, cover it with a line of glitter.
Even Quicker Nail Art
Don’t have time to transfer patterns or allow many different colors of paint to dry? Try even quicker nail art solutions to make yours look fancy for the holiday.
Focal nail: Create one focal nail to make your nails stand out. Choose one nail on each hand and paint it differently than the rest. Paint this one in a different color, or add a design, to create a quick, amazing look.
Nail charms: Get a great look with very little work using nail charms. They’re available online and in beauty shops in a variety of shapes, including small hearts. Simply place the charms on wet nails (carefully) to allow them to dry in place.
Stickers: Place tiny stickers on your nails instead of trying to paint fancy designs. Once nails are dry, press little heart stickers anywhere on your nails you like. After they’re all in place, paint a clear top coat on nails and allow it to dry. The topcoat will seal the stickers in place.
Metallic markers: Painting on designs can be tedious work, but it’s not as hard to draw them right on. Use metallic markers to add designs to dry nails, and you can create any Valentine’s Day look you like.
DIY your nails for Valentine’s Day, and create the look you want without spending a ton of money at the nail salon.
