Easy Ways to Repair a Torn Vinyl Window Shade

by fat vox

A torn white vinyl window shade can be a real eyesore, especially when the tear is fully visible. In an otherwise stylish room, even a small tear sticks out like s sore thumb. Ripped shades do not always have to be replaced. Many self-trimming varieties tear very easily, and they are just as easy to repair. Use these creative ways to fix the problem, and use it for many more months or years.

Make the Repair with White Duct Tape

As the old saying goes, if duct tape will not fix it, nothing will. Patching a torn white vinyl window shade is the best method of repair. Take the shade down, and place it on a clean flat surface. Cut a piece of white duct tape just large enough to cover the tear. It should overlap the rip by just a couple of millimeters. Smooth it into place. The makeshift bandage might be all that you need to sufficiently hide the damage, but if it still evident., use one of the following additional options for repair.

Cover It with Cotton Fabric after Making the Repair

If the duct tape repair is still too obvious, consider covering the entire white vinyl window shade with cotton fabric. It will hide any imperfections, and as a bonus, it will also block out any light that would otherwise filter through. Unroll it on a protected flat surface, and make sure that it is clean and dust-free. If not, wipe it with a damp cloth, and dry it completely before continuing. Coat the white vinyl shade with spray-on adhesive, and apply cotton fabric of your choice. Smooth it into place, and carefully trim away the excess material that overlaps the edges. Roll it back up and it will look better than new. The repair will not show, and you will have a gorgeous designer window treatment for the cost of a couple of yards of fabric and spray-on fixative.

Add Decorative Duct Tape Shapes and Designs

If a duct tape patch is not enough, and if you do not want to cover your vinyl window shade with fabric, consider adding another decorative option. Duct tape comes in solid colors and countless designs, and it can be cut into all sorts of shapes from hearts to flowers and more. Use a stencil to trace shapes of your choice using a fine-tip marker. Cut out the shapes, and strategically place them on the window covering. The torn area will not be visible when covered, and it will be even less noticeable if the entire window shade is embellished with the same eye-catching designs.
