When it comes to social media, there really is a right way and a wrong way of doing things. And the first wrong step you can take is diving into it without a real plan. It’s interesting how entrepreneurs have a plan for everything because they know how important planning is in a successful business, but many never have a plan for using Twitter and Facebook. Creating accounts on social media platforms is easy, and anyone can do it in a matter of minutes. However, you shouldn’t let yourself be deceived by this because, even though posting on these websites is very easy, that doesn’t mean it’s going to bring you any real promotion if you do it randomly. There is a right way to do things from the very beginning, and you don’t have to make the mistakes that others made, because the Internet is full of great information about how to use social media correctly.
When I first started using social media, I did it just like most entrepreneurs. I jumped into it without giving it much thought. After all, my intention was to promote my blog and my business, and I believed that meant I had to post links to my content on Twitter and Facebook. Why wouldn’t it be enough? Well, I later found out that this is never enough. If we use the social media platforms like this, we fail to take advantage of what they really have to offer, and that is the opportunity to build a community.
The importance of social media
The moment you start using Twitter or Facebook you realize the one thing they are really good at is helping you connect with your audience. And if you are an entrepreneur, you know that your audience is the most important aspect right after the quality of your products and services. An engaged audience is anyone’s dream, because the chances of these people purchasing your products and telling others about you and your business are higher when they feel they can connect with you. On a social media platform, you are more reachable than on a website or a blog. Your followers feel that they are closer to you because they can send you a direct message, comment on your posts, and share your content with a simple click. If you develop a good promotional strategy for Facebook and Twitter, you will drive an incredible amount of traffic to your website.
You might think that it is easy to build an audience on a social media site, especially because readers only have to hit “follow” or “like” to show their support. But the truth is that the numbers have no value if your “followers” are not engaged and forget about your website right after they “like” it. It’s up to you to turn these numbers into a solid community, and turn your “followers” into your friends and customers. You have to make them care, and you have to make them look forward to your next products or articles. You’ll see that you succeeded when they leave comments on anything you post, showing that they are truly interested and value your opinion.
The most important thing about using social media correctly is to understand that it can be turned into a powerful marketing tool. Most people use Facebook and Twitter in a personal way, but if you do this, it means you ignore the true potential of these social media platforms. Let me tell you what I would do differently if I had the chance to start all over again in social media: I would follow the steps below, and I would try to learn as much as possible from those who have succeeded to create an engaged audience with these sites.
Step 1: Don’t start without a plan!
Social media promotion is just as important as any other part of your business, so sit down and make a real plan before you create those accounts. Make sure your plan answers some basic questions, such as “What are your goals?” and “How will you achieve those goals?” and “How will social media help your business grow?” You need a real strategy if you want to make the best of these sites and see results in the first couple of weeks. The next steps I’m going to present must all be part of this plan.
2. Decide who is your target audience
Actually, you should already know who your target audience is. If you don’t, then start thinking about it right away, because if you start posting on social media without knowing who the people you want to reach are, you’ve set yourself up for failure. Determining your market is a vital part of any business, and it’s very important to know as much as possible about this target market. What do these people need? What are their hobbies? What are they looking for when they spend their free time on Facebook? The answers to these questions will help you plan your strategy better in order to get your target’s interest by speaking to the wants, needs and concerns of the people who might want what you have to offer.
People will feel when your content is meant for them, and they will be more than happy to get involved. They will leave comments, share your content, and look forward to your next offers because they’ll feel that you know exactly what they want and need. But, to be able to reach your target audience like that, you have to answer the above questions in as much detail as possible. So take your time and study your market carefully. Your efforts will pay off.
