Yahoo! Voices first covered Michael O., one of the most killer vocalists ever featured on any singing competition, during his time with the Dartmouth Aires on the third season of “The Sing-Off,” with an official first review of his stunning six-track masterpiece, “In the Beginning…,” in which I had praised the young talent for producing what could be a real debut hit. As it turns out, during the first week of sales, the soulful artist has already managed to light the iTunes charts on fire with his debut EP, peaking at #3 on the R&B charts thus far and still potentially climbing. Of the tracks from the album, one of my top two favorites has got to be a song entitled “Breakdown,” an intimate piano-based ballad which summons a true power of soul to deliver a heartfelt, strong vocal depicting life and love’s hardships. This makes it especially an honor to announce that I have been chosen as the one to break the news — in a Yahoo! Voices exclusive, Michael O. premieres his first-ever music video in the form of “Breakdown”!
The video is appropriately low-key, featuring the up-and-coming pop/R&B artist traversing the streets to various locales in his town, singing to a love lost with a ton of heart. He doesn’t overact his role, either — everything seems extremely genuine, which is a great thing to be and is especially impressive when you consider that this is the man’s first official music video ever. “Breakdown” as a song was already a master-craft in and of itself, featuring a tender and heartfelt nuance that not every artist can say they can summon in the way that Michael O. can. When paired with a fitting video performance, the song is really set over the edge from “masterpiece” to “timeless masterpiece.”
You can check out the music video for “Breakdown” right here and right now. Trust me, you won’t be sorry! If you like what you hear, you can purchase “In the Beginning…,” which features “Breakdown,” for only $2.99 on iTunes by following this link, with a portion of the proceeds being sent to the Mugadi Foundation, which was founded by Michael O. and his mother to assist in providing proper children’s education in the Global South.
Also make sure to check out my official review of the EP (linked in the first paragraph) and my list of 20 great summer songs of 2013, which features Michael’s own “Start With Tonight.” With all of this in mind, just think — you could very well be playing your part in supporting an artist that can truly establish himself as a legend of the industry. The people of Dartmouth must sure be proud of this up-and-coming starlet.
