Paul Maddox is a wealthy man with only a few bucks in his pocket. To society at large, he’s worth more dead than alive, and there are many who would eagerly turn in his hide for money.
Both sides of the Mexican-American border are strange land to him, and he’s not outfitted for survival in harsh conditions among harsh people. Having to flee quickly with no time to prepare has left him friendless and standing out in this rugged environment. Being easily spotted can get him caught or killed, whichever is less trouble.
Nothing has turned out as he’d hoped, as they’d hoped. Those elected to work for and represent the American people had turned on their own society years ago. Little by little they’d continued to force U.S. citizens into a society of worker-bees with their elected representatives cracking the whip, telling them what they had to do and warning them of what they were prohibited from doing.
Finally their representatives had used them up until there was nothing left to take, other than the air they breathed and the dirt they scratched out a sparse existence from. But, being greedy to the end, their representatives had sold that too.
The citizens are angry but aren’t to be pitied. It was their own negligence and dedication to ignorance and apathy that allowed them to be ruled over. As a majority, and forgetting the difference between a republic and a democracy, they’d brought it on themselves. Each season things got worse and still they marched blindly forward, as they were instructed to do, by the very people they’d hired to work for them.
They got tired of being vigilant in protecting their freedom and so they lost it. Now things were worse than they had been when the first colonists were struggling to survive with King George’s royal foot on their throats, and his red coats hanging them from the gallows when they failed to shell out portions of their earnings, or were disrespectful to representatives of the crown.
In fact, by now King George and his red-coated henchmen would have looked good to U.S. citizens. Maybe even good enough to be elected as president by those who tended to vote for the lesser of the evils.
Finally their government has grown too big to be fed by the poor nation supporting it, and in a last ditch effort to make a few more pennies, the land and it’s bedraggled citizens have been sold out to a bigger and meaner power.
People are no longer trying to sneak in to the U.S., but many are desperate to get out, and Paul Maddox is one of them.
Once upon a time, Michael Friedman’s Murder Once Done would have been considered fiction without a remote possibility of becoming a reality. However, in today’s society it’s a frightening picture of a very real possibility in the not-so-distant future.
The story is gripping, edgy and evocative. It’s also incredibly affordable and available on amazon.com for only $.99.
