If you have a pair of ugly candle holders, do not get rid of them. Whether they are made of glass, wood, cast resin, ceramic or even plastic, they are very easy to update. Various options can be used, and they are all incredibly easy. Try one or more of these five fantastic ways to add color and unique style to your old holders. They can look completely different, and for less than the cost of new sconces or budget votive cups.
Never burn real candles in holders that could melt or burn. Also, if materials used to update the candle holders could melt or scorch, do not burn candles with wicks. Battery-operated varieties last a lot longer, and no matter what they are made of or covered with, they are far safer than wax and wick types.
Cover Ugly Candle Holders with Decorative Washi Tape
Japanese washi tape is similar to masking tape, but it is much more colorful and has numerous decorative uses. If you want to update ugly candle holders quickly and easily, washi tape is the answer. Search online or in a craft store for a design of your choice. Carefully wrap your old holders to give them a completely new style. Be sure to match the patterns row by row for a neater look.
Spray Paint Plastic, Metal or Wooden Holders
Another fantastic way to update ugly candle holders is with spray paint. Choose the paint according to the material. Krylon Fusion paint is perfect for plastic. Metal or wooden holders can be coated with ordinary Rustoleum or something of similar quality. Use blue masking tape if you want to apply multiple colors or patterns. It works just as well on crafts as it does on ceilings and trim.
Decoupage the Holders with Art-Quality Tissue Paper
Tissue paper and decoupage can be used to decorate and update plain candle holders. Since it is semitransparent, it is not recommended for patterned surfaces. Buy the art-quality type. Tissue paper that is typically used for gifts will run when wet, but the kind meant for crafts is colorfast. Coat the holders with decoupage medium, and apply ripped pieces, circles, squares or shapes of your choice. Be sure to overlap them to completely cover the surface. After it dries, finish with a top coat of glossy decoupage. The paper shapes will have a gorgeous imbedded look.
Use Fine Sisal Rope to Wrap the Ugly Exterior
Cheap and particularly ugly or plain candle holders are also easy to update with sisal rope and thick clear-drying adhesive. Use fine rope on smaller holders. Begin by wrapping each one without applying glue to determine the proper length. Cut it to size, brush on the adhesive, and tightly and neatly wrap the rope around and around. They will have a unique nautical look. Add a decorative wooden or glass anchor or an embroidered emblem, if desired.
Cover Them with Glitzy Faux Gems
If you prefer glitzy decor, update basic votive cups or candlesticks with faux gems. Chose clear or colored cut jewels with flat backs. If the holders are truly ugly, start with a coat of paint or white paper wrap. Glue the gems in place one by one in alternating rows. They will beautifully shine and sparkle when touched by light.
