“Evil Dead” stormed into theaters in the spring of 2013 to the delight of horror fans everywhere. It is a remake of the 1983 film by the same name and has been called one of the best horror films of the year. The film was written and directed by Fede Alvarez and stars Jane Levy, Jessica Lucas, and Shiloh Fernandez. Prior to its release, it was dubbed, “the most terrifying film that you will ever experience,” and received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). One of the best ways to gain insight into the film and the things you need to know about it is through five quotes that shed a little light on what you can expect from this super-scary remake.
The premise behind the film is embodied in a quote spoken by a demon in the movie: “There was something in the woods.” The premise of the film is a horrifying one. Five friends end up in a remote cabin and end up discovering a book-the “Naturom Demonto” or “Book of the Dead.” Unknowingly, the friends summon up demons that have been living in the woods near the cabin. One by one, the friends become possessed by the murderous demons until only a sole survivor remains. As one character, Mia, says, “There was something in the woods, and I think it’s in here with us now.” She was right, but by then, it’s too late for her to do anything about it.
This film is not for the faint hearted. If you are a parent who is lenient enough to allow your teen to watch R-rated movies, you may want to think twice before you sign off on allowing your kid to watch this one. As Mia warns (while under possession by a demonic force): “We’re gonna get you. Not another pee. Time to go to sleep.” That scene alone is enough to keep even the most courageous and hard-to-scare adults awake for at least a few nights after watching this scare fest.
This film is violent. “Your girlfriend just cut her arm off. Does that sound fine?” This is one of the most violent horror films of recent time with tons of blood and gore. But more than the amount of blood that’s shed on the screen is the way that the violence goes down. Great camera angles really put the viewer up close and personal during the infliction of violence to make you feel like you’re really there when it’s happening. If you’re squeamish around blood and are bothered by people severing their own arms with the help of an electric saw, you might want to skip this one.
You may be in for a shock if you’re basing your expectations of this film on previous films in the series. More specifically, there are no light moments and no reason to smile while watching it. As the following quote shows, there’s little to laugh about in this version of “Evil Dead”: “We will kill you. One by one. We will take you.” Unlike its predecessors, including the original “Evil Dead” and the two subsequent titles in the “Evil Dead” franchise-“Evil Dead II” and “Army of Darkness,” there is no humor in this segment of the series. The other earlier films were a mix of dark humor and mind-boggling horror. “Evil Dead” 2013 is shamelessly scary. Viewers won’t find themselves giggling, that’s for sure.
“You’re gonna die here, you pathetic junkie!” A major plot twist really shakes up the franchise in this film. In the original “Evil Dead,” the friends were all at the cabin for what you might imagine-a night of unbridled partying and sex. In the new version, one of the characters is there trying to kick an addiction to heroin, and the others are there for support. This lends at least part of the story an added element of suspense as viewers wonder if she is really seeing the evil things in the woods or if she is actually hallucinating as she detoxes from the drugs.
The new version of the “Evil Dead” was really written, produced, directed, and filmed to accomplish one major goal: to shock. The masterminds behind the film were looking to scare people who have been watching horror flicks for decades, and who are so accustomed to the traditional fare of ordinary horror flicks that they’ve become immune to being scared at all. Most reviewers agree that if that was the goal-mission accomplished.
