Writing fiction is not always an easy task. It is time consuming and writers block is such a nightmare you often wonder to yourself why you aren’t banging your head on the table for having such a crazy thought to write in the first place. I have come up with five useful tips that will hopefully help you to create that masterpiece you have been striving for
1- Getting inspiration
One of the hardest things about writing is not knowing what to write about and that in itself is extremely frustrating, believe me I know all about that. But it doesn’t have to be so disheartening. A story can be written from anything. For instance remember that moment in your childhood that was completely embarrassing that you had never told anyone about? or that story your grandfather has told you a hundred times because he can’t remember that he told you those other ninety-nine times? Finding inspiration is easy. Songs, people, places even if you sit down somewhere and observe people around you eventually the idea will come, you just have to keep looking.
The hardest part with characters is sticking with the characters personality and making them believable. Now I believe that all characters no matter how dull or lively they are all have a certain something about them that makes a reader either like them or hate them and ALL characters have to have a flaw. Like the human world no one is perfect so your characters shouldn’t be either. It is fair to say that you want people to either like or hate a certain character but regardless if you make a character too perfect or too flawed people are just going to scoff and not continue to read. The worst thing you can do is write in a character that makes people say “NO ONE IS EVER LIKE THAT!” because this means they can’t relate. If you write in characters people can’t relate to your going to lose audience.
3-Research! Research! Research!
No matter what you are writing unless every single detail is strictly from your imagination at some point you are going to have to research and I know how monotonous that can be but I can tell you it will make a huge difference. Whether it’s a era, a person, a place even things like foods, animals, minerals etc. it is amazing what you can find out. Era pieces in particular need research, you need to know what you are writing about especially in works that are set hundreds of years ago, sure you can make assumptions and guess what it was like but go to a library and find books on your subject, yes it’s a bit more of a nuisance then using the internet but people who write should read and books are still cool…at least I think so
4- The Thesaurus Is Holy
The one book I love above all others is my thesaurus it is possibly the most useful tool you can have. Not everyone is a walking talking dictionary, not everyone can give you five alternatives to every single word that has ever existed and that’s ok because I don’t think there is too many people who can do that but believe me a thesaurus is like a Greek God, powerful, useful, can create magic and has plenty of followers. Writing is not easy as you probably would have discovered and what makes it even harder is trying to find words so your not constantly repeating them and not only that but they can help make it sound like your articulate. Once you have written a paragraph go through it and try to change some of the words using your thesaurus but do not go overboard because there is nothing worse then reading a paragraph with misused words or words so complicated you have no idea what the paragraph even says. Space it out and only change the words that are necessary and make sure if you change the word and you have no idea if it fits use a dictionary and you’ll soon discover if its perfection or a complete strain of nonsense.
5- Don’t Give Up and Keep Your Chin Up
I must admit over the course of thirteen years I have failed countless times and it is extremely depressing and disheartening but no matter what was said and no matter how horrible I felt I kept going because writing is the only thing I have ever wanted to do. I know what it is like to feel like a complete failure when you don’t achieve your goals but don’t let anything stop you. I will spend the rest of my life trying to get a published book and I will continue to write for competitions because the feeling you get when you win an award for something you love doing will make you feel on top of the world. The only person that can tell you that you can’t write is yourself and the only person who can stop you from writing is you. Don’t give up on a dream if that is a dream you truly want and that is in regards to all things if you give up then that dream fades. You can do it if you believe in yourself, it may take some time, I mean I have been writing for thirteen years so I know all about it taking time but if you keep pushing yourself and believing that you can do it ,you will, it may be sooner it may be later just keep your chin up and write.
I hope this has been helpful for all you budding writers so I wish you good luck!
