As one-time visitors, we’re totally hooked. For the price and the beauty of this Florida Keys beach, your vacation at the Bahia Honda State Park may be one of the most memorable.
Super clean – The Bahia Honda resort is immaculate. You’ll see labeled trash boxes where people are likely to leave soda cans and stuff from their picnic.
Beautiful white sand – Like what you would expect from a high-end resort. The wonderful thing is that you’ll enjoy the same kind of luxury without paying for the same high-end price.
Quiet, picturesque – Find you a spot where you can sit down, watch people, swim, and still be far away enough from everybody. Relaxation is one of the best reasons to go to Bahia Honda
Picnic areas – If you plan to stay for the day, there are areas where you can grill right in front of the beach. Very convenient and organized.
Cabins by the water – You will enjoy the fact that you can navigate all over the resort and actually jump off your front door straight to the beach when you rent the cabins. They are where the water is, but not too close to the main road.
Affordable food in cafeteria – I ordered the tuna sandwich and my husband had deli meat and both were deliciously prepared. Sandwiches and hotdogs are anywhere from $3 to $8.
Book a year in advance – If you’re lucky enough to be one of those few who have been able to stay in the Bahia Honda resort cabins, then you probably know that you can’t get the same spot unless you book a year in advance. It’s hard to make summer plans when it’s this early (plus you don’t know if there’s a hurricane coming) so unless you’re so sure you’re headed for the Keys, it’s not totally advisable.
Mosquitoes – Since you’re in a pristine area, many insects and animals are left to roam on their own. Mosquitoes are no exception. I suggest that you set up your picnic stuff away from the forest or the butterfly garden, where mosquitoes and ants will bite you nonstop.
One shower area – I’m pretty sure there are showers all over the area, but if you’re in one area such as the one near the Butterfly Garden, one shower stall for everybody is not adequate. It’s out in the open, there are four showers in one stand, one to wash the feet, and that’s it.
Overpriced gift shop items – I would really have purchased something from the Bahia Honda’s gift shop but the items are unreasonably expensive. Think: a shot glass worth $2 on a regular souvenir store is sold twice as much. You get the idea.
No pets allowed – Since my mother-in-law brought along her dog, she was not able to swim.
Bahia Honda is a natural wonder and a great stopover if you’re headed to the southern part of the Keys. For the price of entry, everything is worth what you’re going to enjoy.
Tip: Swim in the afternoon about 3 p.m. when the crowd is leaving and the air is getting cooler. Don’t forget to cross the old Bahia Honda bridge all the way to the end where you can see a panoramic seascape of the Seven-Mile bridge and the small islands scattered around Bahia Honda resort. The view is splendid.
