My appointment was yesterday at 9:45
As many of you know I have been having periods where I cannot talk, and I can’t remember things. I also can’t drive anymore because I have times when I get lost and don’t recognize anthing. It causes me to panic, because I know I’m supposed to know where I am, but I don’t. You may remember I wrote about having an ambulatory EEG, where I wore the electrodes for a couple of days. The doctor was able to give me a diagnosis, so that I know all this isn’t just psychological. For so long, doctors have suggested that my problem was psychological. It’s not.
My neurologist said I have complex partial seizures, which is also known as complex partial epilepsy, and focal seizures. I do not lose consciusness when I have these seizures. I had no idea that these episodes were seizures. It blew my mind.
My doctor prescribed an increasing dose of Lamictal. My dosage started with 25 mg and after 2 weeks it increased to 50 mg, and then after another 2 weeks I advanced to my therapeutic level which is 100 mg. So far the medication has not stopped my seizures. I still have periods where there are no words in my head. All I can say is “die, die, die” and or “bye, bye, bye.” There is just nothing in my head. It’s like I have forgotten how to talk for those few minutes when I am having a seizure.
My neurologist also diagnosed me with RLS (restless leg syndrome). He ordered me Requip to be taken before going to bed. The doctor gave me a memory test. I had a really hard time with parts of it. I could not give him the day or the date. I had trouble pulling up the year. I couldn’t think of the what month we are in. I guessed it was March because I felt cold. It felt right to me, but of course… I was wrong.
I knew what city we were in, and I knew we were in the doctor’s office… those types of questions I did okay on, but I couldn’t pull up the dat, date, month and year. My neurologist wants to give me another few months on the Lamictal and then decide what he wants to do about it.
I had another appointment yesterday with my spine doctor at 12:30 p.m. I was in terrific pain in my back. I listed the new meds that the neurologist gave to me, and my doctor said she wants to wait a month and see how I do before she changes any of my medicines around. She said she thought the Requip would help with my back pain also.
As it stands right now I will be seeing my spine doctor in another month to see how my pain level is. I will see my neurologist in 3 months. If in 3 months I’m still having memory problems my doctor will decide what he wants to do about it.
