I am a baseball player. If there is one thing you should know about a baseball player, it is that we are a very superstitious species. That is why I am taking blame for the shenanigans that took place in the National Football League recently. What seemed like a harmless jersey order with a handful of my friends actually turned the NFL into a circus yesterday. For the first four weeks of the season, I sported either a blue Tedy Bruschi jersey or a red throwback Wes Welker jersey. But how could I not want to try out my new jersey for week five? What seemed like a simple wardrobe change led to two undefeated teams going down as well as the Raiders pulling out the win in a game that nobody on the East Coast stayed up for and the Cowboys almost winning a shootout with Peyton Manning’s Broncos. Shall we dive deeper into the week five action?
The Cowboys were so close. They almost did it. But did anyone actually think Tony Romo was going to lead the Cowboys down the field in the final minutes of the game to set them up for the winning score? Of course not! Only Tony Romo could ruin a career game, the greatest game by a Cowboys quarterback in the history of the franchise by throwing an interception with just minutes to go. However, the Broncos can be beat. Coming into Sunday, I was debating whether I should start my “starter,” Colin Kaepernick, against the Texans, or Tony Romo. I decided Kaepernick needs to earn his job back and Romo was my starter going forward. Fifty points later, I think I made the right choice.
What has happened to Kaepernick? Is he suffering from the lack of read options being called? Defenses now do not have to game-plan against the quarterback run, are focusing on the passing game and they are shutting down Kaepernick. You would never know that he had just over 100 passing yards after looking at Sunday night’s final score.
While Kaepernick has managed over 167 passing yards just once thus far, he was not the quarterback from the Sunday night game who may lose his job. Matt Schaub threw a pick six for the fourth straight game. That interception was one of three on the night. Texans fans are calling for his head; however, Schaub is still the best option in Houston right now. They may want to consider looking for a quarterback in the upcoming draft, as TJ Yates is not the answer, but for now Schaub is their best chance to win. On a side note, I would take Case Keenum over TJ Yates. He can throw the ball. You know what, start Keenum! They could use to mix it up a little and I like Keenum more than Yates.
Best chance to win? Score some touchdowns. I guess the memo wasn’t sent out league wide. Four teams did not score a single touchdown this past weekend and have joined Eli Manning on the Wall of Shame. Just kidding, it is going to take much more than that to join Eli in that category. Congratulations to the New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, and Detroit Lions. Another game like that and the president of the Wall of Shame actually may induct you. How’s that sound, President Eli?
You know what, I don’t think I even have anything to say about Eli and his three picks except for the fact that he did it against one of the worst pass defenses in the league.
Michael Vick got hurt, EJ Manuel got hurt worse, and Brian Hoyer is done for the year.
I really wish I could talk about the Chargers vs. Raiders game but it didn’t start until 11:35! You know what, I’m going to talk about it anyway. I’ll be right back, I just have to watch the highlights. Don’t go anywhere…
Okay, I’m back. This is what I saw. Pryor looked good, Rivers did not but rookie Keenan Allen did and the Raiders defense played well. There you have it. Can’t get more detailed than that. It is almost as if you watched the game.
You know what did not get hurt? The Colts’ playoffs chances. After putting a shellacking on the 49ers in San Francisco two weeks ago, the Colts took down the NFC’s best Seattle Seahawks by putting up 34 points on arguably the best secondary in the league. Even though the Colts see what Peyton Manning is doing in Denver, there is no second guessing going on about their decision to go with Andrew Luck.
That Falcons seemed like they were going to catch a break by facing the New York Jets after losing to the New England Patriots in week four. Unlucky for them, Geno Smith had the best game of his short career posting an 80% completion percentage and did not throw a single interception for the first time this year. He also led them on a game winning drive with only minutes to go. The Falcons could be learning the hard way that you need a solid defense to win and it isn’t all about a great offense. They haven’t been able to stop a nose bleed this year with 23 being the fewest points they’ve given up in a game.
Romo threw a costly pick, Cam threw lots of picks, and I killed it with my picks last week.
Giants at Bears -8
Eli is going against a defense with 14 takeaways on the season? No brainer.
Raiders at Chiefs -9.5
Hey, the got the win for me in week five and the spread was even smaller.
Eagles -2 at Bucs
Packers -3 at Ravens
Lions -2.5 at Browns
I reserve the right to change this depending on Calvin’s availability.
Panthers at Vikings -2.5
Rams at Texans -7
Steelers -3 at Jets
Bengals -7.5 at Bills
They stopped Brady, they should be able to stop Thad Lewis.
Titans at Seahawks -13.5
Jaguars at Broncos -28
UPSET ALERT!! The Broncos will not cover!
Cardinals at 49ers -11.5
Saints at Patriots -2.5
Second in the NFL in points allowed, this defense is again elite. And the Saints defense isn’t as good as the Bengals.
Redskins at Cowboys -5.5
Colts -1.5 at Chargers
Week 5: 9-5
There are only two teams on byes in week six but one of them seriously affects many lineups. That team is not the Miami Dolphins. The Atlanta Falcons, however, have fantasy starters at just about every position. This week seriously affects me and I am not happy about it.
Alright so Matty Ice is going to riding some fantasy football pine this week. Who is going to take his place?
Everything I said last week about Alex Smith applies this week as well. Another option for week six is Joe Flacco. The Ravens will be throwing the ball a lot against Green Bay. What did I tell you last week? No, no, I do not mean the Brian Hoyer pick. If he stayed healthy I stand by that pick. You cannot predict injuries. Except with Michael Vick. You can predict he will get hurt at some point. Anyway, I’m talking about my Terrence Williams pick. If I may…
“If you are in need of a receiver off the waiver wire, take a look at Terrence Williams of the Cowboys. Miles Austin can be counted on as much as Danny Amendola to stay healthy and the Cowboys are sure to be playing catch-up come Sunday. If Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie follows Dez Bryant around, Williams could be getting a lot of targets.”
While it did not matter who was covering Dez Bryant because he still put up massive numbers, Terrence Williams had a big week as well. Williams put up 151 receiving yards including an 82 yard touchdown and a two point conversion catch, good for 23 fantasy points (27 in PPR league).
There are a few running backs out there who could replace Lamar Miller or Jacquizz Rodgers. For starters, Zac Stacy. Stacy went for 78 yards against the Jaguars and will remain the starter. He will be going against a Texans defense that was just torched by the Niners running game.
Another option would be Knowshon Moreno or Ronnie Hillman. The Broncos should have a lot of running plays on Sunday after they take a huge lead over the Jags. This will be the game we see if Peyton Manning really cares about stats. If he is still throwing the ball later in the game, it will be clear his stats are very important to him, something I already believe.
There are a handful of wide receivers that could be legitimate plays this week. There are a lot of receivers on byes, despite only the Falcons and Dolphins missing the week. Julio Jones, Roddy White, Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline are all loses in fantasy in one way or another.
I am sticking with Michael Floyd this week but only if you are desperate since he is going against the 49ers.
Now that the Vikings are playing football again, I say go out and grab Jerome Simpson to replace one of the guys on a bye. We just don’t know who his quarterback will be this week. It looks like Matt Cassel will be the starter but you never know, Freeman could make an appearance.
How badly do you need a wide receiver? That badly? Try Ted Ginn Jr. He may not be very consistent but he has looked pretty good this year and could break a 7 yard slant pattern into an 80 yard touchdown with his speed.
Rod Streater is another possible option. He had a decent fantasy game last week, but it really all came on one touchdown catch. But hey, that’s all it takes sometimes!
Tight end is where I need help. Tony Gonzalez missing the week is huge. I drafted Brandon Myers as my backup but we know Eli can’t hit the broadside of a barn so he was dropped. Manning threw the ball 52 times and targeted Myers only five.
It is so tough to find a tight end. I picked up Garrett Graham. He is the number two tight end behind Owen Daniels, but he is a solid red zone target and all you need is a touchdown to make a terrible week into a decent week. Other than Graham, there is not much. Kellen Winslow Jr. may be an option if he is healthy.
Looking at the waiver wire, there is not a ton out there for defense this week. The team I am looking to pick up is the Philadelphia Eagles. I know, they have a bad defense. However, they are playing a bad offense. Mike Glennon at quarterback makes it so the defense can focus on Doug Martin and stopping the run. Two other options are the New York Jets who are playing the Steelers and the Carolina Panthers playing the Minnesota Vikings.
I know, those are all weak options. However, it is all about the matchup. Look at the Rams. They put up 13 points COMBINED the first four weeks of the year. A nice matchup with Jacksonville was all they needed to put up 15 points in week five.
Well there you have it. Now I just have to hope that my Robert Griffin III and Florida Gators Tim Tebow jerseys come in this week and bring better luck than the Russell Wilson one. Psshtt who am I kidding, I know I’m going back to the Patriots’ jerseys!
