Pine trees are iconic of Christmas and other winter holidays. They are a customary decoration in countless homes, but not everyone prefers tradition. Some would rather to do what they want instead of what others expect. If you would like to display something else, go for it! Be a free thinker, and do not follow the holiday crowd. Break tradition by using one of four creative alternatives to a tree. Alternate choices can be even more festive than time-honored options.
Artfully Arrange Strings of Lights on a Wall
A simple string of lights and a few small 3M hooks can be used to create a wall-mounted contemporary Christmas tree. With help from an extra pair of hands and a roll of masking tape, arrange a string of lights on a bare wall in zigzag formation. The overall design should be triangular in shape. After determining the desired position, use a pencil to mark where the hooks will be placed. Take down the preliminary design, and apply the hooks. Hang the string of lights to form a modern rendering of an illuminated tree.
Decorate a Wall Decal
Another one of the most impressive alternatives to a Christmas tree is a wall decal that has been embellished with actual ornaments. Buy a peel-and-stick maple, oak or birch decal. Use pins to hang metallic bulbs and other decorations on the limbs. Place an end table in front of the trunk of the tree, and use it to hold wrapped gifts.
Embellish a Foam Cone with Christmas Bulbs
Large foam cones can be turned into Christmas tree alternatives that will look gorgeous. Since some of the background will be visible in between the embellishments, begin by covering the foam with garland in a color of your choice. Pin it to the top of the cone, and wrap it around until the entire surface is covered. Pin it at the base. Using the photo as a guide, cover the wrapped cone with metal balls in a variety of colors. Attach them with hot glue. Place it on a stool or another small furnishing has been covered with white velveteen fabric. Arrange small gifts directly around it, and place the others on the floor. With this beautiful decoration, you will not miss a green tree.
Fill a Gallon Glass Jug with a String of Colored Lights
Alternatives to a traditional Christmas tree do not have to look anything like the customary variety. If you really want to keep it simple, fill a gallon-size glass jug with a string of colored lights. Simply thread the lights into the jar and plug the other end into an outlet. Place the jug on a stool, and arrange the gifts around it. Take it from someone who makes it a point to steer clear of tradition. Some of the very best Christmas trees are not trees at all.
