Smart phones are great tools that have many uses for day to day activities. Apple’s “iPhone” is one of the most popular phones in the smart phone market and customers and critics alike praise the phone for being easy to use and bringing innovative ideas to the market such as the “App Store”. While I agree that the iPhone is a very cool toy and has a lot of functionality, it is just simply not as good as everyone claims it is. Here are four reasons why the iPhone is not as good as it appears to be.
- 1. Hardware
There is no denying that the iPhone has some pretty powerful stuff under its hood. However, once you branch out to different brands of smart phones you will realize that it actually lacks in power compared to its competitors. Phones like the Samsung Galaxy S III have a better resolution on its screen (which is .8 inches bigger than the iPhone 5), better battery life, more powerful specs and a better camera.
- 2. Customization
On other operating systems, such as Google’s “Android” OS, allow you to change just about everything about your phone. You can download different themes, different keyboards and different apps that aren’t restricted by Apple’s approval process. On the iPhone, customization is limited to changing the background on the screen and changing the placement of apps on each page. The lack of customization keeps the iPhone simple, but it also keeps it bland compared to its competitors.
- 3. The Charger
Apple’s new “lightning charger” actually does charge the phone very fast. It’s a great upgrade to Apple’s old charger, which seemed like it took forever to get the battery back to above 20%, but the thing is so breakable. Out of three months of owning an iPhone 5, I had to replace my charger twice. These things aren’t cheap either, with an official USB lightning cable starting at 20 bucks. While this may not seem that expensive, it adds up after you have to replace it again and again.
- 4. Fragile Screen
Chances are that you or somebody that you know has cracked the screen of their iPhone before. Without a case on the device, the fear of dropping and breaking the phone that you cherish ever so deeply will consume and distract you from doing normal daily activities. All of the cases that you can buy that actually protects your phone (and not just a fashion statement) are gigantic, bulky and makes carrying your phone around a chore rather than something that you enjoy doing.
As you can see, the iPhone is not better or even as good as its competitors. Once you get over the flashy design, it does not have the functionality you could get from cheaper, more durable alternatives.
