Rattan balls are available in all sizes from small orbs for indoor decorating to larger varieties that can be used indoors or out. Larger assortments are ideal for outdoor use. When properly anchored or tied, they will not blow away. They can be used with lighting to beautifully illuminate an outdoor living area or entryway, and they have many decorative uses. Consider four ways to decorate outdoors with unique hand-woven items. Whether painted or stained, they will look gorgeous in a backyard, front yard, in a flowerbed or on a porch or deck.
Create a Rattan Arrangement in a Flowerbed
Large woven balls are ideal for the flowerbed. They are far different than the usual outdoor decor. As the photo shows, even a single painted orb looks phenomenal. To prevent them from blowing away, anchor them into the soil using metal rods with hooked ends.
Begin by outlining a circular area. It should be several inches larger in diameter than the grouping. Next, line the circle with landscape fabric, and cover it with mulch in a color and type of your choice. Surround the mulch with grapefruit-size stones. Anchor the rattan balls in the center for a unique and lovely display. To add more color and visual interest, top the mulch with an array of flat glass pebbles that will sparkle and shine in the light.
Hang Them from Lower Tree Branches
Woven wicker orbs also make fantastic tree decor. Hang them using heavy fishing line on lower tree branches. For something really unique and impressive, move the woven material aside, and add battery-operated outdoor votive or tea light candles with timers. The lighting will transform ordinary wicker balls on thread into a one-of-a-kind outdoor display.
Fill Hanging Rattan Balls with String and Other Nest Building Supplies for Birds
If you want to hang rattan balls from tree limbs but do not want to illuminate them, consider adding something to help the birds. Fill the balls with pieces of cotton string, strips of fabric and other materials that birds use to create their nests. The display will serve as a decorative nest building station.
Suspend Vertical Rows of Rattan Balls from the Eaves
Decorating the entryway of a covered porch or deck is easy with rattan balls. Suspend three or four in varying sizes from thick fishing line. Evenly space them using sturdy knots. If they are not woven too tightly, consider adding battery-operated tea light or votive candles with automatic timers. They will welcome your evening guests while softly and beautifully lighting the way.
