Animal habitats and earth biomes are popular subjects in school curriculum. Depending on your school’s science program, kids will study different habitats in various grades of their school career. In high school, wildlife biology classes look in-depth at earth biomes. Oceans are a favorite biome with kids. If you’re studying oceanography or marine biology in school, here are free printable lesson plans and science worksheets. Homeschool parents, you can use these too.
* National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration: Click on any world exploration links for specific lessons based on that ocean exploration. Next click the “education” link from that page. You’ll find videos, reading materials, tests, activities and worksheets and games. Some have suggested science experiments that relate. Explorations cover the worlds oceans: Pacific, Indian, Atlantic, Arctic and Southern. Areas include Ring of Fire, ocean canyons, arctic regions, platform corals, Chile margins and submerged new world (an underwater view of what the continents called “Americas” looked like before they were discovered by Europeans).
* DLTK-Kids: This site had loads of free printable coloring pages of ocean life and marine creatures. The images are mostly cartoon-like and would be appropriate for preschool, kindergarten and special needs students. There are pictures of clams, mussels, crabs, eel, lobster, fish, octopus, jellyfish, dolphin, stingray, seahorses, squid, shark, seal, shrimp, sea turtles, walrus and whales.
* Edupics: For advanced, realistic coloring pages of water animals, Edupics has 156 printable images of sea creatures. There are creatures from every kingdom: sea birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and some insects. Students can color bivalves, crustaceans, anemone, underwater plants, coral, whales, dolphin, sharks, manatee and even seashells. When I was teaching, I printed coloring books of animals and plants interacting in the habitats we were studying. I posted pictures and made a color guide to show kids how animals should be colored. This helped students learn about camouflage, body covering and other biology concepts.
* Enchanted Learning: This is a one-stop source for free printable lesson plans on any subject. You can print booklets, crafts, activities, worksheets, puzzles, games, maps, charts, diagrams and more. If you pay the nominal site fee, you get -banner-free printables. Here’s the link to the ocean printables. Subjects cover: marine life, waves, tsunamis, hurricanes, weather, water cycle, ocean zones (floor, intertidal, euphotic-sunlit), explorers, coral reef and related topics.
