“Genevieve, what a surprise to see you here!” He said as he smiled.
“What are you doing in New York?” I asked intriguingly.
“Business” he answered and smiled.
I saw that John was looking rather confused.
“John, let me introduce you to Arturo. We grew up together. Arturo, John is a photographer for the magazine,” I said nervously.
I was nervous. I had not seen Arturo in over a year and he still made my senses respond. I felt fluttered and aroused, just by seeing him at that moment. I was hoping it was not obvious. John was a co-worker, and I had not discussed my personal life with him. He had no idea what Arturo meant to me, and I wanted to keep it that way.
John and Arturo stood up, simultaneously, and shook hands.
“Nice to meet you.” said Arturo to John.
“The pleasure is mine. Why don’t you join us at our table? We have room for one more.” John said to Arturo.
I wanted to kick John for inviting Arturo to join us.
Arturo walked over to our table and sat with us. He already had coffee and some sort of pastry.
“You know, Genevieve, this coffee is nothing like your dad’s. I miss going to your house, and having a good cup of coffee.” Arturo stated.
The last cup of coffee Arturo had at home, was the one I made for him. That day, how I remember that day. I wondered if he was referring to that.
“I miss dad’s coffee, and I miss him and mom, too. I have not been home in over a year. It has been too long. I hope that I will be able to visit in the next few months, since I have some vacation accumulated.” I was rambling.
John asked Arturo, “What brings you to New York?”
John was curious of Arturo. I could see it in his expression.
“I am in town for a week. We are installing a new software for our shipping business, and I am here for the training.” He explained.
“Wow! What a coincidence to find you here. This is the last place I would have thought I would run into you.” I said sounding pleasantly surprised.
“Right? I knew you were living in New York, but never thought I would run into you, especially, on my first day in town.” I could see he was nervous by the sound of his voice.
John’s curiosity was getting the best of him. I heard him clear his throat and say, “Are you staying in this hotel?
Arturo replied, “Yes, the training is here, too.”
“How are Maritza and Lilly Ann?” I asked.
“Lilly Ann is a handful. Maritza is another story. Her seizures are back.” He added.
“I am sorry to hear about Maritza’s condition. I hope all is well.” I said with empathy.
The waiter returned with our order.
“John, look at the time, is almost time for our meeting. We had better hurry. Arturo, it has been a pleasant surprise to see you today. Too bad, we don’t have much time.” I said almost sad.
“Genevieve, if you are going to be here all day, would you like to meet up for dinner? You can join us, John?” Arturo asked confidently.
“That is fine with me. I don’t have any commitments afterwards, and we don’t have to go back to work.” John answered with a smirk on his face.
John had agreed in hopes he could find out more about Arturo. I had kept my private life to myself.
“It is settled then, how about if we meet at six in the lobby?” Arturo affirmed.
“It looks like you two have a plan that I can’t refuse. Count me in, then.” I interjected.
Actually, I wanted to refuse. First, I did not want to meet Arturo. Second, I did not want to be at dinner with John. He was a coworker, and did not need to know my personal life. I knew John had an interest in me, and all he wanted was to find out more about Arturo, and maybe get some details of my life. It was hard enough to hide my true feelings during a small chitchat, but how could I do that during a full dinner conversation? Maybe there was a way I could get out of the commitment.
