Halloween decorations always look so cheap; they’re usually paper or plastic and not too impressive. This year, instead of hanging a Halloween garland of card stock letters that say “Happy Halloween”, or a garland of black paper cats, how about a nicer garland of ghosts? They’re not paper, they’re three-dimensional, and they’re really easy to make. Hang them up at your Halloween party, or just somewhere in your house – or outside. A ghost cup garland will get more attention than your table full of scary foods.

Disposable cups look like ghosts when you make them into a quick garland. You’ll need a type of cup that is plastic and white. Look at Dixie or Solo cups to find the perfect ones for your Halloween garland.

Besides the cups you’ll need a strand of white or clear Christmas lights. With them, you can turn the ghost garland into a spooky, lighted version. Wear or hold a potholder, hold a pair of pliers, and with them, hold a nail. Heat the nail and you can easily poke it through the bottom of a cup, in the middle. Do that until you have one cup for each light on the strand.

Push one of the Christmas lights into each cup. Then, use wiggly eyes to turn the cups into ghosts. Put two eyes on each cup – or maybe you want each ghost to have one large eye. Put each set of eyes up high on the side, near the bottom (now the top) of the cup. String the lighted ghosts up where you want them. Don’t have any wiggly eyes? Use a marker to make the eyes.

There are various garland arrangements that you can do for a Halloween celebration. Use orange cups, and a black marker, to make a jack-o-lantern garland. Or, use green cups, and a black marker, to make a monster garland. If you can’t find cups in those colors (you often can when it’s Halloween season), color them with markers, or paint each cup.

The lighted cup garland – whether ghosts, goblins, or pumpkins, are adorable – and a little scary. Hang them around open doorways, along banisters, and around porch posts. Most any place that you can hang Christmas lights, you can hang Halloween ghost lights.

Go online, or to your nearest store, and purchase some Dixie cups. Get some wiggly eyes and you’ll have the garland made in just a few minutes. Then, you can start preparing the scary foods!
