I’m currently a bit of a traveler, but I have spent my childhood in Louisiana. A large part of the time I grew up was spent living and working in New Orleans. I was never really that much into football when I was a lot younger, but a few of the people at the university I studied at were avid fans. Not surprisingly, I kind of picked up the habit. Who else, then, was I to support but the New Orleans Saints? I have also had a lot of experience with the memorabilia that Saints fans tend to collect, so I’ve got a pretty good idea of what they might like for a Saints-themed gift. Here’s a few of my selections.
Signs in Team Colors
This isn’t exactly at the top of my list. These signs, however, are some mighty fine works of craftsmanship. A lot of the other signs by the TheGingerbreadShoppe are also kind of witty. Sometimes picking out an item that’s a little more subtle is the best bet. You don’t have to look corny, or feel like you are being a copycat, when you make your holiday purchases.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about fans of any type, whether it be Nascar or Football, they usually have their walls filled with all sorts of decorations and memorabilia. If that’s not going to be a problem, you can always try to make sure it will with these flags. They’re good indoors or out, and they are durable enough that if they ever do get stored away they’ll be a nice reminder of old times.
Jerseys of the Quarterback
You can almost never go wrong with a jersey made to resemble Drew Brees, the quarterback that everyone who knows the Saints knows. He’s made a lot of records with his passing skill, and nobody can forget the time he led the Saints to victory in Super Bowl XLIV. If the one you’re giving to has a favorite player who they really connect with, you will probably also have a lot of luck. But, you can probably hold on the Breesus T-shirt.
“Keep Calm and March In” T-Shirts
Okay, maybe a Jersey just isn’t their thing, or they have tons of them already. I personally prefer t-shirts like these. They don’t represent a particular player, but they can be a really cool display of team pride. If you’re the traditionalist, you can always go for one that says “Who Dat,” but where’s the fun in that?
Gumbo Figures or Plushes
A big beefy dog really symbolizes the energy of the team. Maybe not a Saint Bernard, but the name worked out pretty well. Gumbo, the Saint Bernard, is one of two mascots of the Saints. The other is Sir Saint, a knight. Yes, I think the dog is more endearing. These plushes are not exactly my favorite, most of those have been discontinued and are rather hard to find.
Jerseys for the Dog
These have always seemed a little corny to me. Clothing for dogs, that is. However, if your friend has a dog, it will probably end up looking either pretty silly or pretty cute. If your friend happens to have a Saint Bernard dog, however, that could end up being quite humorous in itself.
Coats or Jackets
I’d almost forgotten that I wasn’t in Southern Louisiana when I realized that it just snowed today. If you’ve got a friend or a relative who is going to be in the colder climates, one of these nice jackets would do well. They are actually pretty practical, as they have a removable fleece that’s great when it’s way too warm to wear a coat.
Beignet Mix from the French Quarter
This isn’t exactly Saints memorabilia, but it had to make it onto my list somewhere. Cafe du Monde, a nice cafe with a wonderful atmosphere in the French Quarter, also offers their famous recipe for beignets as a mix. They also sell coffee and other eats, but what really makes me miss going there all the time are those excellent square French doughnuts called beignets. This product makes a nice gift, but the mix does require cooking experience.
A Saints Canopy
Have you had a lot of fun with your friend or friends hanging out and watching the game? Maybe it’s not something they do, but cookouts with shrimp and crawfish are a great way to pass the time leading up to kickoff. I know from experience living in trailer parks how hand it is to have a canopy over my head for pregame beer and eats. They are nice to have for walking outside and keeping dry year-round, but they are not safe to leave up in hurricane conditions.
Madden NFL 25
Does your friend also happen to be a gamer? If so, they might appreciate a copy of the video game Madden NFL 25. You can get versions for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, as well as iPhone and Android devices. You certainly want to make sure they can run the game before purchasing, of course. The Madden series of games are pretty awesome and have some breathtaking graphics.
I hope some of these suggestions have helped you decide what to buy for the Saints fan(s) in your life. I’ve tried to include some rather inexpensive items, as well as a couple bigger items. Of course, I’m wide open for comments on what fellow fans might suggest.
