‘Glee’ Recap: ‘Tina in the Sky with Diamonds’ (Season 5, Episode 2)

by fat vox

Coming off a tough summer from the loss of actor Corey Monteith (aka Finn Hudson), Glee is back for their fifth season this year on FOX. This second episode of season five is part two of the glee club performing the Beatles.

Last week, we heard the following Beatles songs: “Yesterday,” “Drive my Car,” “Got to get You Into my Life,” “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,” “Help!.” “A Hard Day’s Night,” “I Saw Her Standing There,” and “All You Need is Love.” And for a quick recap of last week’s episode: Sue is now principal, Blaine proposed to Kurt and Kurt said yes, and Rachel didn’t do so well at her Funny Girl audition.

The episode opens with Blaine and Sam discussing prom woes, while the glee club dives into the Beatles’ more experimental years- the years of Rubber Soul where they wore their hair down. Sue announces prom king and queen nominees, which included Blaine, Artie, Kitty and Tina. Tina tells Sam she’s going with a bunch of single girls instead of him. Then Tina breaks into “Revolution” but the bell rings and the class is dismissed. Santana tells Rachel she booked a commercial for yeast infections. Back at McKinley, Kitty is confronted by the Cheerios about her supporting Tina for queen instead of promoting herself. Kurt and Rachel sing a piano-laden version of “Get Back.”

Sam meets a nurse named Penny and is nervous about talking to her. Santana meets a fellow waitress names Dani (played by Demi Lovato) and gets sweat under her boobs as the thought of going out with a real lesbian makes her nervous. After spotting Penny in the hallway, Sam sings “Something.” The Cheerios enlist the help of Tina’s assistant to pull a prank. Dani and Santana sing “Here Comes the Sun” as they watch a sunrise and walk out of work. Dani gives Santana a peck on the lips.

It’s prom, and glee club, in full Beatles drab, sings “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” led by Unique, Ryder, Marley and Jake. Sue announces the prom king and queen as stoner Brett and Tina. Kitty sees the bucket of red goo before it’s too late to stop it from falling on Tina- a Carrie-esque prank pulled by the Cheerios.

The glee club goes to rescue an upset Tina, and convinces her to go back out to prom anyway. Blaine sings “Hey Jude” (even hitting the high notes) while the girls clean and fix up Tina, Kitty allowing her to wear her dress. Tina gets back on stage with her crown and announces that she is queen.

The lead cheerleader in charge of the prank is brought into Principal Sue’s office, but as her punishment, Sue promotes her in the Cheerios and asks her to help her destroy the glee club. At work, Rachel encounters her casting director who tells her that she won the role of Fannie Brice. Rachel, Santana, Kurt, and Dani than celebrate and sing “Let it Be,” along with the New Directions back home.

Besides the songs played in this episode, the members of Glee also performed other Beatles songs from the past, such as when Kurt sang “I Want to Hold your Hand” and “Blackbird,” when the juniors sang the seniors “All My Life,” and when all of them sang (with the deaf choir) “Imagine” by John Lennon.
