There are seven different arenas to Neopets Battledome plus the exclusive arena for premium players. Within each arena there are different challengers. The prizes that you can get when battling are awarded when you complete a battle and win; draws and losses award you nothing. There are some challengers that will award you exclusive prizes but with so many people playing every day the prices on them have dropped dramatically.
Some of the most valuable items given out are Codestones; they can be sold, used at the Techo Mountain to create red Codestones or used to train your pets abilities. Nerkmids are nice to get but the prices on them have fallen so most people will opt to buy them on the Shop Wizard. There are some decent prizes in the Frost Arena but I have gotten a lot of useless snowflakes and food items and when I did the math I ended up with less Codestones then when battling in the Rattling Cauldron.

After my second battle I got Neowarts; at that point I wasn’t sure if it was something that was going to be a recurring thing or not. That happened with one of the challengers during the Obelisk war and the price of the cure (Neowart Fungus) went through the roof. That happened a second and third time and I decided to switch challengers but stay in the Frost Arena.

I try to enter the Battledome as soon as the clock flips, that is when I usually get the most Codestones and the least number of duplicate prizes. When I played on the 19th I got no Codestones but did get weak bottled faeries but at this point in time I want the Codestones to train my pet. With the possibility of the Obelisk War starting back up everyone is watching the clock and training their pet as often as possible.
The biggest glitches for me in this arena are the matches that freeze; there is no way to get the match to restart so you have to refresh and start over. This is not the same as the end-of-match glitch where the challenger is at zero hit points but the game does not end. To solve that issue just click on a weapon and reattach it to have the match complete.
There are a lot of theories about which arena awards the best prizes and doles out the most Codestones. Some of the things to think about are the difficulty levels of the challengers, weapons you are using and when to rotate them, when to play, how often the faeries abilities should be used and if you should stick with one challenger or one arena per day or skip around. I have been playing at least 20 rounds a day and haven’t seen a conclusive pattern. The hard core Battledome players have their secrets about their moves and combos but the message board for the Obelisk and the Battledome are both great places to ask questions and get help if you need it.
