Overview – Playing the Marvel: Avengers Alliance hero Black Bolt is sort of like wearing a straight jacket. You have incredibly few options while playing him and can easily have no options at all. Like most tacticians, it takes him a few rounds to power up, but unlike most tacticians, it is almost impossible to prevent his build up except by defeating him. Unfortunately, since he is rather flimsy, it is hard to actually unleash his full power. If you choose to use Black Bolt, you are practically required to pair him with a protector or a really good healer. Of all the choices in the game, Wonderman is probably your best bet. If you choose not to do this, you will almost certainly lose him before the end of the second round.
How to Obtain – To obtain Black Bolt you need to complete all 25 tasks in Special Operation 13. He will likely go on sale at some point in the future for 200 command points as well.
Special Abilities – Flying / Electron Harnessing – This character’s first ability makes him immune to ground attacks. Electron Harnessing grants a stack of the ambient particles buff to any ally that attacks or is attacked. Ambient particles stack up to 10 times and grant a 5% reduction in damage per stack. Most importantly, this buff cannot be removed or prevented. By round three your team should easily have 15-20 stacks total which is what you need to unleash the real power of this hero.
Kingly Fists (Level 1) – Kingly Fists is the only power this character has that doesn’t have a cooldown. It deals moderate melee damage to a single target for a moderate stamina cost. It also deals bonus damage when it scores a critical hit and applies the off-balance debuff, a rather useful debuff when facing infiltrators. This will be your primary attack, not because it is particularly good, but because it will often be your only choice.
Royal Flight (Level 2) – Royal Flight deals moderately low melee damage for a moderately high stamina cost to a single target. It grants a single stack of ambient particles and lets you make two attacks with this character next turn. But since you are so limited by available attacks, this benefit is rarely useful and it is particularly unimpressive on a tactician. You are probably best saving this until at least one of your other cooldowns is about to end because the extra stamina cost of Kingly Fists really isn’t worth the benefits gained.
Whisper (Level 6) – Whisper is one of two catastrophic attacks this character has and the main reason to use this character. The stamina cost is almost mind boggling and the damage is nearly trivial. But, when used, all enemies are affected by buff blocker and by incapacitation. These are two of the best negative effects in the game, especially in PvP. You should use this attack the moment it comes off cooldown.
Power Word (Level 9) – Power Word is the other catastrophic attack and it costs only slightly less stamina than Whisper. This ranged attack deal massive damage to a single target and consumes every stack of ambient particles on all characters to increase that damage. Furthermore, the attack ignores shields. By the time the power comes off cooldown you should be able to use it to one-shot any enemy in the game, assuming all three of your heroes are still alive.
Unlocks – This character is not currently required to unlock any Marvel: Avengers Alliance game content and is unlikely to be required in the future.
PvP – Black Bolt is an excellent choice for PvP, but only with a very well designed support team. He is incredibly flimsy and easily defeated before Whisper becomes available. If you can manage to use Whisper, the debuffs of that attack should make it easy for you to keep him alive another round until you can use Power Word. You need to be particularly wary of phasing when using this character because if you will with Power Word, you have almost no chance of keeping him alive long enough to use it again. Also, when using this hero you need to be especially careful not to lose any allies, because that will significantly weaken Power Word.
Variant Uniforms – No variant uniforms currently exist for this character in Marvel: Avengers Alliance and none are likely to be released in the near future.
