Synopsis: Cavern of the Troglodytes is the first non-introductory module in the online game Card Hunter and it is the first module to really ratchet up the difficulty. It bills itself as being for characters of level 1-4, but lower level characters will definitely have difficulty with this. Since there is a good chance your cleric is only level 1 for this module, you will definitely have to be careful. It is also the first module that is more than one scenario, so while you will get more treasure, you won’t actually get experience until after you complete the second scenario.
Enemies in Module:
Trog Spearmen – Trog spearmen are minions, and like all minions in Card Hunter, they can only attack once per turn, unless they are in a group of only one monster. They have 10 hit points, a normal move speed of run (3 squares), and every single one of their attack cards is a stab attack with a range of 2 squares. They also have armor cards that have a 50% chance of preventing 2 damage.
Trog Scuttlers – Trog scuttlers are minions, limiting them to only one attack per turn each. They have 7 hit points, a standard move speed of scuttle (2 squares), and every attack card in their deck is a range 2 stab. They have the same armor cards as spearmen. The big difference between spearmen and scuttlers is that they have a lower average damage on attacks and more movement cards, including some run cards.
First Scenario – Trog Cave:
Setup – You will start the first Cavern of the Troglodytes mission on the right side of the map with two trog spearman on the map as well. One is four squares away and the other is seven squares away. The map has lots of difficult squares, but no blocking terrain.
Enemies – Trog Spearmen (2)
Strategy – Unfortunately, even though your fighter should have a shield by now, block cards are practically worthless against these enemies. Flimsy Block won’t block any of their attacks and Weak Block will only block half of them. If you can manage to put a Parry card in your deck, do so, but otherwise you will need to rely mostly on Unreliable Block and more importantly, powerful armor. You should put as many armor cards as possible in your fighter deck and equip him with any stab cards you can. Penetrating cards are also a good choice for both your fighter and your wizard.
Your first priority in this fight should be to move your wizard and your cleric backwards at least one step. This will probably prevent your cleric from fighting, but he is flimsy enough at this point that you can’t really afford to let him actually fight. Just heal with him as much as you can. Focus fire on the first trog spearman to run up. If you are lucky, between your wizard and fighter, you should be able to kill him in the first round. If the enemies manage to run twice in the first round, move your fighter so he is more than two squares from one of the two trogs or use a force bolt from your wizard to push one of the trogs away. Once the first drops you should be able to outlast the second, since it can only attack once per round.
Second Scenario – Stench Cavern:
Setup – You will start the second Cavern of the Troglodytes mission on the bottom of the map. Two trog scuttlers are in the upper left portion of the map and a trog spearman is in the upper right. The center of the map is filled with blocking terrain and the ground is littered with difficult terrain.
Enemies – Trog Spearmen (1), Trog Scuttlers (2)
Strategy – The secret to this Card Hunter map is to divide and conquer. The spearman is slow enough that it will take a few rounds to reach your party, while the scuttlers will engage a lot faster. Take advantage of this and move left to start the fight. If you are lucky, you might be able to pick off one scuttler with your wizard before it engages. Even if you aren’t, between your wizard and fighter, you should be able to defeat one. Weak Block is more useful in this scenario, since it will block most of the scuttlers attacks, but armor is still your best choice. Use the blocking terrain to keep out of the range of the spearman for as long as necessary to defeat the scuttlers and try to heal as much as possible before engaging it. You should expect it to have 6 damage attacks by the time you do engage, so make sure your fighter can take at least 12 damage if your armor cards fail you.
