Synopsis: Wizard’s Workshop is the first module in the online game Card Hunter that has four scenarios. While it is listed as a module for level 2 characters, at least two of the scenarios have massive difficulty spikes that make it a better choice for level 3 characters. At the very least make sure you have completed Cavern of the Troglodyte before attempting this.
Enemies in Module:
Tin Golems – Tin golems are minions, limiting them to only one attack per turn each, like all minions in Card Hunter. They have 15 hit points, a standard move speed of walk (2 squares), and attack cards that deal 4 or 5 damage. They have armor that blocks 3 damage 50% of the time and enough in their decks that there is a good chance of two being active at the same time. Finally, they have a clumsy card in their deck which makes it impossible for them to attack enemies behind them.
Bronze Golems – Bronze golems are basically tougher versions of tin golems. They have 22 hit points, a normal move speed of walk, and single target attacks that deal 6-8 damage and a double target attack that deals 4 damage. They also have a plethora of armor cards that have a 1/3rd chance of blocking 4 damage. Luckily, they have a lot of clumsy cards in their deck.
Ornithopters – Like tin golems, ornithopters are minions. Ornithopters have 12 hit points, a standard move speed of dash (4 squares), and two frustrating attacks. One is a melee attack that strips armor and the other is a cone attack that deals ongoing damage.
First Scenario – Workshop Level 1:
Setup – You will start the first Wizard’s Workshop mission on the right side of a nearly empty map with a pair of tin golems on the left side. Cover is basically non-existent on this map.
Enemies – Tin Golems (2)
Strategy – Defeating this scenario is all about mobility and penetrating attacks. The golems can move, at most 4 squares in a round and usually will only move 2. Stand back with your wizard and pepper one with damage, preferably penetrating damage for as long as you can. During the first round move slightly into the room, but only far enough that you can’t get pinned by walls. Also spread your characters out so none are less than three square apart. Now, never move your characters unless a golem moves next to you. If a golem becomes clumsy, pounce with your fighter. Get directly behind it and attack repeatedly. The golem will not be able to counterattack. Stay out of reach and you will eventually win.
Second Scenario – Workshop Level 2:
Setup – You will start the second Lair of the Trog Wizard mission on the top of the map and a single bronze golem is at the bottom of the map. This map has a central piece of blocking terrain and difficult terrain around the edges, but is still mostly empty.
Enemies – Bronze Golem (1)
Strategy – The strategy for this Card Hunter map is almost identical to the previous one, except you need to be even more cautious. Never let your characters end in a movement fewer than 3 squares from another and horde movement cards. You may even want to increase the movement cards in your deck at the expense of other cards. Play keep away with the golem and watch for the moment he becomes clumsy. That is when you pounce. If you don’t have a lot of penetrating cards in your deck this will be a long, slow, drawn out fight.
Third Scenario – Workshop Level 3:
Setup – You will start this scenario in the middle of a map that brimming with difficult terrain and blocking terrain. Tin golems will be on the right side and bottom while ornithopters will be in the lower right and left sides. All but the bottom tin golem will be behind cover.
Enemies – Tin Golems (2), Ornithopters (2)
Strategy – Playing keep away from the golems is a lot hard with all the terrain and a pair of ornithopters. Also, you simply can’t rely on armor to keep you alive in this scenario because the ornithopters can destroy it. Your best tactic is to run towards the far corner of the room away from all enemies. The ornithopters can chase you down, but the tin golems won’t be able to keep up. Once you have separated the two groups, bear down on the ornithopters as quickly as you can. You don’t need penetrating attacks against them, so let them have it with attacks like Big Zap and Trained Bludgeon.
Once they have fallen, you can now revert to your previous strategy for taking out the tin golems. It is slow, but basically required unless you are lucky or have a lot of healing available.
Fourth Scenario – Workshop Apex:
Setup – You will start this scenario in the middle of map with a little bit of blocking terrain and hindering terrain in the lower left corner. Ornithopters flank you on the left and right and a bronze golem is 4 squares from you on the bottom of the map.
Enemies – Bronze Golem (1), Ornithopters (2)
Strategy – Start running away from the bronze golem as quickly as possible. If the golem has two walk cards from the start, it can reach some of your characters and early hits from it will spell the doom for your party. Just like last map, pile damage on the ornithopters early and avoid the golem at all costs. You will definitely need a mix of penetrating cards and high damage cards on this map in order to easily defeat both types of creatures. Once you have defeated the ornithopters, the slow speed of the bronze golem should make it an easy target to eventually chip away at.
