What you’ll need:
Moon Pies
Candy melts, edible markers, and/or frosting
Toothpick
What are your favorite kind of Moon Pies? The regular ones? Mint? Peanut butter? It’s hard to choose a favorite, isn’t it? The chocolate-coated, cookie and marshmallow, is so yummy that there are no suitable words. One word that usually doesn’t describe a Moon Pie is “sinister”. But, you know, it’s Halloween. Anything can have a spooky look when Halloween comes around. And, when you take ordinary Moon Pies, and decorate them to your liking, you can create delicious Halloween treats for partying kids and adults.
Moon Pies have the perfect surface for writing on. It’s smooth, comes in assorted colors, and is nice and large. That makes it easy to write, draw, or otherwise decorate it for Halloween. Use chocolate moon pies and decorate with red or white frosting. Use orange Moon Pies and decorate them with dark brown chocolate. There are lots of different designs that you can do, depending on how much time that you have, and what the theme of your party is (bats, pumpkins, etc.). Choose from colors/flavors like yellow lemon, yellow banana, brown chocolate, brown peanut butter, and pink strawberry Moon Pies.
Dark chocolate candy melts can be used to draw and write on the Moon Pies for a party. Use a toothpick, dip it in the chocolate, and draw a rudimentary bat. Or, use the pick to scrawl “Happy Halloween” in a creepy font. It can be helpful to look at a particular font as you write. Other choices include writing the person’s name on the Moon Pie with red frosting (blood), or just making simplistic designs, such as dots or stripes.
The surface of the Moon Pie – particularly an orange one – makes a great jack-o-lantern. With an edible marker, draw a jack-o-lantern face, and the moon pie will be the actual pumpkin. It’s not at all hard to draw triangles for eyes and a nose, and a toothy grin, with a marker.
Frosting in a tube makes it easy to write and draw on a Moon Pie, too. Draw anything from a Frankenstein, to an alien, to a Halloween sign. You can also tint white frosting with food coloring, put it in a zip-lock bag, and twist it. Cut the tip off of the bag and you can squeeze the bag to write, or “pipe” on frosting.
Moon Pies have a lot going for them when it comes to Halloween. They’re inexpensive yet large, they’re actually quite decadent, and they look just like they are made for Halloween – because they are!
