Hallucination or heaven? This is the question asked by the experts whose patients experience such phenomenon, and near death experiences into the afterlife happen more frequently then you would expect. For those who believe, it is conformation, and for non-believers, it is simply ethereal and enlightening to the extent of life changing in the majority of documented cases. In various studies and polls conducted around the world it is estimated that eighty percent of people believe in heaven, despite having a visual lack of proof that it does truly exist. Proof of Heaven author and a Harvard trained neurologist, Eben Alexander was one of those who lacked faith until everything he knew and believed in was put to an extreme test where his life lay in the balance after he went into a coma and by his own account, took a journey to heaven, even though his scientific training taught him otherwise. His journey began with a nightmare induced searing headache followed by a seizure and a lack of verbalization abilities during his medical crisis brought on by a rare E coli meningitis infection that literally attacked his brain, sending him to the hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Eben’s doctors gave him almost no chance of living with his current condition rapidly declining, and even if he did survive he would more than likely be brain damaged for life. Unbeknownst to his family Eben was doing anything but suffering while laying in a deep coma state; in fact he believes that he traveled to heaven through several different facets from a dark and murky underworld to the warming vision of a compelling light that spun. A beautiful melody accompanied the light offering comfort, tranquility and peace. The light then opened up into a vivid valley bursting with color and the feel of something very powerful. God was there amongst the complex setting in an orb of brilliant light as was a beautiful woman who took flight with Eben on the wing of a butterfly and soared to dizzying heights. The beautiful woman, possibly an angel gave Eben a powerful message filled with hope that included encouraging words from telling the coma induced doctor that he was loved, cherished and that there was nothing to fear.
Once Eben returned to planet earth in the medical sense of the word he was faced with questions concerning his journey to heaven. The skeptics claim that his travels were nothing more than a hallucination, but the faithful have no doubt that he has described heaven in its purest form and was in fact graced by God and his guardian angel. Eben knows beyond a doubt that his experience was not a hallucination, dream or a confabulation of filling memory gaps with imaginary things that gloss over the detrimental condition of the delicate condition of his brain that had been violently attacked. The Harvard graduate also knows without a doubt that he visited heaven on a journey through the afterlife and the no-nonsense brain surgeon will accept no other explanation because it was personally that real and pure to him.
Eben, who was adopted, was offered a deeply touching coincidence that he took away from his journey to heaven that occurred right after he woke up and looked at a photo of his biological sister who he had never met, and had since passed away many years before. He was hit with the immediate realization that the angel that flew with him on the butterfly’s wing was the same woman in the photo, leaving him with the knowledge that his guardian angel was in fact his deceased sister. The Alexander family are no longer skeptics of heaven, guardian angels or miracles and Eben claims that this proves that our soul or spirit does not depend on the brain and is free to the possibilities of a higher state of knowing.
Author John Geiger has investigated the phenomenon surrounding guardian angels for years and feels strongly that when a person experiences something so tragic that it defies death that our human survival mechanism kick’s in. Skeptics easily explain it away as hallucination, but for the person dealing with the circumstances of the moment some sort of healing and reassurance is needed and this is where our guardian angels come in and take brief control of the situation which typically elicits peace at a chaotic time when the brain is fighting to come to terms with terror, shock and grief.
Beliefs, Facts, and Sightings of Guardian Angels
An old world tradition claims that each babe born comes with a guardian angel companion that remains with us through life and our guardian angel can influence our mind and suggest thoughts that are meant to protect us from danger. According to the encyclopedia, those people who have seen their guardian describe them as young, beautiful, commanding and majestic. They are often accompanied by a warm and comforting light with a mission to offer profound reverence to deflect the terror of the immediate situation so that a person can somewhat cope and come to terms of what is happening while feeling comfort and reassurance.
All religions have some type of tradition pertaining to spirit guides or guardian angels being assigned to individual human souls. Angels communicate with God, see him clearly and they have a complete understanding and knowledge of the person that is under their immediate care. Angels praise, worship, serve and report to God. The Bible never says that Heavenly Hosts or angels have wings; this is a preconceived notion made up by man, and when you consider that God travels by using his power, then why would he not give this same consideration to the angels that serve him.
In 1865 workers witnessed a beautiful angel hovering in the clouds during the construction of the Thames Embankment of the Angel of the Thames. Since then many people have come forward with stories of angel sightings in the area and report that immediately after seeing the angels they are instantly treated with a feeling of calmness and a peace of mind. http://www.angelofthethames.com/recentsightings.html
A large group of people showed up at the London Borough Southwark docks after word spread that an angel appeared not long after the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. A photograph of the hovering angel confirms that something truly divine happened during a time when people needed faith and hope restored.
