I remember the L.A. riots. The chant was “no justice, no peace.” It makes me think about justice, the many ways we define it and what this verse of Scripture might mean.
Social Justice: This is an oxymoron. Making a whole group of people pay for what some of their group did is wrong. It’s also judgmental, usually based on outward appearances. Worse, it creates victims rather than victors.
Like many in the U.S. who have been here for generations, I have quite a mixture of different “national origins.” Some of my ancestors were here when the others arrived. There is no “social justice” under the terms because I can’t tell myself to go home or that I should have to pay the rest of myself because of what was done to me. Can you see how silly this can get?
What is real Justice? Real justice is personal. It’s about what each of us do or don’t do. It’s not about what someone else says or does. We can’t change others unless we can change ourselves, which rarely happens. We’re not perfect. Romans 3:23 says it best, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” It doesn’t say that “all gentiles have sinned.” It doesn’t say “all (insert race here) have sinned.” Nope, it’s all of us and it’s individual. It also isn’t going to happen until Jesus comes back.
Who will Persist? Jesus will persist until Justice is done. He’s the only One that can. I can’t do it. I’m just as flawed and judgmental as everyone else. Knowing that, I also know that no other human can do it. We can help, but we aren’t the ones that will bring it about.
Why can’t I do it? Aside from natural flaws the job is too big. There’s a lot of injustice of many shapes, sizes and creeds. It would crush a single person or even a single group of people. We’re finite…our mortal life will end long before we can achieve the goal.
What kind of Justice? Human justice does play a role. If one country attacks another, the attacked country has not only the right but the responsibility to act. If a person murders, said person can’t be left loose to do so again. This isn’t the kind of justice I’m talking about.
The lion will lay down with a lamb. A child will put his hand in a viper’s den. Total peace is the kind of justice that’s real and the kind that we are looking for.
When will that be? My answer is “soon, I hope.” There is fear and hatred in our world. There is injustice piled on injustice in our world. There are people fighting for the wrong reasons and people who use others for their own ends. There are those who make people feel like victims when they aren’t. I would like to see real Justice soon…for all of us.
