If you decide to go with hospitality management as your major moving forward into college, you could get a range of coursework and subject matter associated with the field. It can be a good idea to jump on some of your hospitality coursework early on in your degree work to ensure that it’s a good match for you and is something you’d like to pursue further. You probably don’t want to get to your junior or senior year only to realize that you’ve been taking classes and working toward achieving a degree in a field that’s not right for you. Not only can this lead to frustration and a lot of wasted time, but it can significantly increase the amount you have to pay for your education and cause you to fall behind in your educational timeframe and pursuit of a job within the field.
Coursework and subject matter
When it comes to the sorts of coursework and subject matter you may experience in your degree work, you could find yourself experiencing a variety of topics in a number of fields that all intertwine with hospitality management. To start with, one such area could include coursework in one of the most prevalent aspects of hospitality, human resources. Beyond general human resources rules, regulations, laws, and management techniques, you might also experience coursework in subjects such as employee management, conflict resolution, employee behavior and motivation, and customer service/guest relations. Such subject matter can better prepare you not only for handling issues with customers in the workplace, but enable you to manage employees more efficiently and teach and train them how to provide excellent customer service and resolve customer issues on their own.
Accounting and finance
While you may not choose to move into the accounting/finance side of hospitality management, this doesn’t mean that you won’t be taking a few classes related to the subjects during your degree work. Nor does it mean that you won’t be using such an educational foundation during your work once out in the field. Even if you’re not working in a hotel finance department or within an accounting role at the corporate office, it’s likely that you’ll use this educational background in some way during your regular work. From reading and developing budgets to understanding revenue numbers, forecasting for the future, or working with inventory management there are a variety of ways in which you could find your coursework in accounting and finance useful throughout your hospitality management career.
Marketing, promotions, and more
It’s also likely that you’ll encounter some coursework in marketing and promotions during your hospitality management degree work. Such subjects can prove helpful in a business in which advertising and marketing your operation could play a significant factor in your business’s success and in setting you apart from the competition.
There can also be coursework in food and beverage management, operations, and guest services. And in some degrees, a specialization in one niche or area within the hospitality field might be allowed to focus on a particular interest area. Otherwise, you may consider pairing your hospitality management major with a minor in another area such as marketing, finance, accounting, or even an unrelated field to act as a backup should you decide hospitality isn’t right for you down the road or decide you’d like to try your hand at a career in something other than the hospitality industry.
