Halloween is the one time of year we are all allowed to go a little crazy. Why not go all out? Part of every costume is the hair, whether it be color or style, or both. Hair accessories are sometimes a must as well. It’s fun to dress up and get wacky, but don’t ruin your hair with crappy product. There are multiple options available for hair color, ranging from temporary to permanent, however it is important to make sure that you do your research and use only reputable, reliable brands. Some hair color products labeled as “safe” may cause severe damage, or even hair loss. If you don’t want to mess with color, pick a memorable hair accessory or two.
Temporary Hair Color Products
Most people tend to use colored hair spray to color their hair during Halloween as a temporary alternative, but hair chalk is one of the cheapest, easiest, and fastest ways to give your hair a temporary color boost without making it sticky. Most drug stores like Walmart and Walgreens usually sell cheap hair chalk, but don’t go that route. It ends up looking very light even on blonde hair, and is hard to maintain. Go to a local art store and purchase actual art chalk. Yes, I said actual art chalk.
What you want to look for is chalk called ‘Soft Pastels’. Artist’s Loft from Michaels is a great brand but really any brand will do. Do not, and I repeat, do not get oil pastels, as they may permanently stain your hair. Artist chalk is a great way to go especially if you have dark hair. For a great video tutorial on how to apply the hair chalk, you can watch Kandee Johnson’s video tutorial on YouTube. As a side note, to reduce any mess from applying hair chalk, use a cape (or over-sized button up shirt) when applying the hair chalk, and then spray the chalked hair with hairspray to set it before removing the cape.
Semi-Permanent Hair Color
Manic Panic is the way to go for semi-permanent hair color. It will not disappoint you! All products are vegan and are PPD and PTD free. Yay! Manic Panic is absolutely amazing. The colors are bright and vibrant, and are fortified with conditioners and proteins to nourish the hair. Color typically lasts about 4-6 weeks.
I do recommend lightening dark hair prior to using Manic Panic products, but make sure that you don’t use store bought packages of blonde to do this. You may end up with green hair if you do so. Use professional hair bleach products from a licensed hair product store or Manic Panic’s Flashlightning. If you need instructions on how to apply Manic Panic, an easy-to-use guide can be found here.
Permanent Hair Color
Perhaps you want to have permanently awesome hair all year long. If that is the case, find a stylist in your area and have it done professionally. It might cost you an arm and a leg but will be well worth it. My recommendation on extreme hair color is Pravana’s ChromaSilk Vivid if you can find a stylist that is familiar with it. Pravana’s colors are absolutely stunning, and comes in eleven superior colors. If you are going to go with this crazy color line and must do it yourself at home, again, unless you have dark hair, you’re going to want to bleach your hair first.
