Whiskey barrels are good for more than just planting flowers. Although they are considerably more expensive than they were a couple of decades ago, they are well worth the price. They are exceptionally sturdy and constructed with hardwood. They can be used to make furniture, and without woodworking skills or special tools. They can be found at garden centers and many home improvement stores as well as online. Consider the following creative ways to make oak barrel furnishings, and enjoy something unique, stylish and extremely durable.
Use Whiskey Barrels as Rustic Side Tables
If your family room or living room is rustically decorated, consider using whiskey barrels instead of ordinary side tables. Buy barrel halves, and turn them upside down for quick and easy furniture. If you want rustic style with storage, place stained wooden tabletops over the openings. To prevent tipping, they should not extend more than four inches past the edge. Apply wooden discs to the undersides of the tabletops to prevent them from moving. Use the tables for storing magazines, extra throws or anything desired.
Connect Pallet Boards to Make a Wooden Kitchen Table
Some of the most impressive rustic kitchen tables are made from reclaimed wood. Disassemble wooden pallets, and make a tabletop using the raw wood. Place the pieces side-by-side on your work surface, and connect them using two or three crosspieces and wood screws of the appropriate length. Sand, stain and varnish the tabletop before attaching it to two or more whiskey barrels. Uses as many as necessary for proper support. The top can be attached with wooden braces and wood screws, or you can use carpentry adhesive for wood.
Make a Kitchen Table with a Tempered Glass Top
If you would prefer a kitchen table with a tempered glass top, use clear GE Silicone ll to securely attach it to the barrel. If tipping is not a concern, plastic discs can be applied underneath to keep the glass from shifting. The discs and adhesive can be found online and in major home improvement stores. The tempered glass top can be found online and in some home decor stores. Pier 1 Imports sells a 36″ glass top that would be perfect for topping barrels. They are ideal for indoor or outdoor use.
Add Round Cushions for Comfy Indoor/Outdoor Chairs
Instead of using bar stools next to a counter top ledge or bistro style table, consider using whiskey barrels. They can be made far more comfy with the addition of round indoor/outdoor cushions. Thick cushions that are designed for outdoor use are much easier to clean. To avoid slipping and sliding, attach peel-and-stick Velcro brand fasteners to the whiskey barrels and the bottoms of the cushions. Your furniture made with whiskey barrels will likely last longer than all of the rest.
