Who would have ever guessed that choosing a child’s name could be so hard! I have only about 2 weeks left until my child is born and gets to see the world for the first time and we have just now come up with the name we are going to settle on, I think. Many movie stars and famous people choose some very strange names and that does come into the equation more than many parents like to admit. After all North West of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian is far from normal, right?
Choosing a name for your child is no easy task. Making sure that it is one that will last a lifetime and fit all circumstances is impossible. This is what the mother of my soon to born child and I found out while we hunted for the perfect name for our baby girl who will be here in the next three weeks.
Here Is How It Starts
Many parents will choose names that are already in their family or that are important to them. Sometimes this is hard because you don’t get to decide the sex of your child and not all names are fitting. Looking at baby name books or web sites is another common practice to get the ball rolling and start brainstorming on a viable name.
We all have names that we are comfortable with, sound good with a last name and we think will be fitting. However, when you start really thinking about names, there are not many that sound that normal, even the simplest name can bring back childhood memories of what other called children with these names. After all, it is pretty easy to rhyme something derogatory with most common names.
Narrowing Down The Baby Name Options
This is where most soon to be parents really get frustrated. The fact that you are no longer just throwing names around and the fear of actually choosing a name that will become final makes this stage of the decision very emotional. I found out that after talking about names that are far from standard for long enough, starts to make them sound much more traditional. This fact is true of many words after they are repeated enough times. The reflex is also true, after saying a traditional name out loud enough, sometimes they start to sound funny or unfamiliar as well.
Now that we had our names down to a small handful, we were able to hold them to the highest scrutiny. When we started asking our friends about some names, we got no response at all. These traditional names were simply not going to cut it. It was not that we were looking for a shock response, but just some response. When Jessica Simpson choose the first name “Ace”, trust me she got a response!
We started asking questions like; Will people think we named our daughter after somebody on a movie or TV show if the name was one that was made popular this way? Will There be one or more students in her school classes with the same name? Will people make fun of her because of the name we give her? These are some hard questions, I must admit, but they bring some great conversations to the table that ultimately helped us come up with the perfect unusual name that we were hunting for.
Finally Deciding On A Name And An Unusual One At That
Personally my better half and I wanted to choose a name that was memorable, unique and fitting to who we think our little girl will become. After going through all the normal names, crazy name and some words, I don’t even know if they qualify as a name, we did come to a final choice. We decided to name our daughter Charleigh. Of course, this is very unusual name, however we thought that the spelling made it stand out from the male version of this name and it is so cute we could not walk away from it.
So with all this in mind, I hope everybody the best of luck in choosing a unique and maybe even unusual name for their children and we are looking forward to meet Charleigh Anne Simpson in the weeks to come!
