I knew it was time for a change. I was so tired, I could barely drag my weary body out of bed every morning. Vitamins, coffee, not even an afternoon nap could replenish my depleted energy. I couldn’t even get up the gumption to make dinner, so it was fast food for us. And often. I was tired, I was groggy, foggy, and fed up with feeling so lousy. And so my husband and I began a big change. We gave up fast food.
We gave up fast food, we gave up junk food, and for a while, we gave up food altogether. I never thought I could go a few hours without food, much less a few day. What were we thinkning?
First, we tried something akin to the Daniel plan. It was hard, and it was expensive. But I lost five pounds the first week. And I definitely felt more alive! The Daniel plan means lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole foods, and nothing processed and certainly not fast food. It’s a lot of work, a lot of planning ahead, grocery shopping, and lots of cooking. Everything from scratch. We ate hard boiled eggs, we ate tilapia, we ate salads, fruits, and vegetables. Lots of fruits and vegetables. I certainly had more energy, but it wasn’t enough. For meal plans, nutritional ideas, and how it works, visit www.thedanielplan.com.
We decided to go even a step further. A friend suggested we try juicing. So we spent a small fortune on a quality juicer, the Omega VRT350, to be precise. And we spent another small fortune on fresh fruits and veggies. And we began to juice. www.fitlife.tv.
We started off with a juice fast. We decided to try the Alpha Reset, from fitlife.tv with Drew Canole. We used a few of his recipes as well as some from our friends to concoct amazing, fresh made juices. The VRT squeezes juice out of everything from oranges, pineapples, and beets to honeydew, celery, carrots, and sweet potatoes. It’s pretty amazing, in fact. Some of the juices were delicious. Others were notably gag-worthy, but still edible. We ate nothing for the first three days, and then added in some scrambled egg whites on day four, and some baked tilapia on day five. After that, we resumed the Daniel plan style of eating. We made our juice the night before, stored it in mason jars with flip top lids, and brought juice with us wherever we went.
We both lost about eight pounds. Sometimes we felt hungry, other times we felt fine. Although your body can go through a detox period with its own symptoms, we both had greatly increased energy, lack of pain or headaches, weight loss, a surge in creativity, and an overall good feeling. We slept better and woke up with amazing energy. And then we slipped.
The following week was a hectic one, with tons of work, household projects, and sick kids. We ate fast food. We binged on sugar. And we gained back a good portion of what we lost. We felt miserable, had headaches, nausea, heartburn, and indigestion. We were tired and cranky. And we realized that we never wanted to go back to that way of eating again.
