There are so many negative influences that can affect the behavior of today’s youth. Some of the negative influences include television watching, videogames, negative peer pressure, and the internet, which promotes sex, violence, and drug use. Sexual messages and images that the youth are confronted with influences them to practice immoral sexual lifestyles. This has caused a tremendous rise in teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and also promiscuity. The media, today, also glorifies violence in such a way that the youth imitate what they view by exhibiting aggressive behavioral patterns. It often times portray violence even as being humorous, such as on cartoons. This can distort a young person’s view of violence and the negative impact that it can have on their lives. Because of the glorification of violence, many youth believe that it is the answer to their problems and as a result, more violence can be seen even in the school system. Other negative influences include peer pressure, which has encouraged the use of drugs. This has altered the minds of many young people, destroyed their relationship with their families, and also has prevented them from leading healthy lives. Ways in which youth can combat these negative influences is by becoming more involved in positive organizations that targets youth, surround themselves with positive peers, and become a positive role model to their friends.
One way that youth can combat negative influences is by being involved in positive organizations, such as YMCA of USA, National 4-H Council, and the Girls and Boys Club of America. Positive organizations help empower young people to become positive-decision makers. They provide them with the tools that are needed to resist behaviors such as violence and substance abuse. Positive organizations also help build their confidence, leadership, job, and life skills. They learn to be responsible and have self-discipline, which enables them to become more productive citizens in the community. Because of the positive impact that these organizations have on young people, it gives them an opportunity to become healthier, happier, and self-sufficient individuals.
Another way that youth can combat negative influences is by surrounding themselves with positive peers. Peer pressure can be beneficial, depending on their choice of friends. Young people should choose friends whose outlook and character are in line with their family values. Young people should surround themselves with peers that will maintain their self-esteem and build their confidence. By surrounding themselves with positive peers, they are encouraged to respect others, have a better attitude and grades. In addition, sometimes positive peers can encourage them to participate even in positive activities, such as sports, and to say no to drugs, violence, and sex. They will choose healthy and appropriate behaviors and change their way of thinking. By choosing the right kinds of peers, young people will have more healthy values, positive actions, and be more motivated to become successful.
In order for young people to have a positive effect on other young people, they must first become a role model. They can encourage their friends to make positive choices and offer helpful advice, which will enable their friends to make right decisions. A young person’s view of life in a positive way can inspire others to change for the better and look at life in the same manner. They can even encourage others to make healthy choices, and motivate them to strive for success. In order to become a role model, they first have to be an example by not participating in self-destructive behavior, sex, and substance abuse. This will encourage others to lead happy and healthy lifestyles.
