We all love to sparkle and shine when it comes to holiday makeup. A little glimmer here, a little glitter there helps us look and feel festive. While a little bit of sparkle looks beautiful and seasonal, let’s be honest. Too much shimmer and glimmer becomes downright tacky on any face. But when you err on the side of using too little, and put it in just the right places, you won’t need to fear the festive shimmer. Here are a few tips and tricks to getting it just right.
Pick one place on your face. If you try to put glitter on your eyelids, your cheeks, and your lips, you’re going to sparkle like the tinsel on a Christmas tree. Instead, pick one feature to highlight with your shimmer. By far, the most popular place to add a little excitement is the eye area. Choose a matte shadow for a highlighter, a slightly shimmery shade for your mid-tone, and go all out glitter with your accent color. Or, try a highlighting cream with a little iridescence to add a subtle sheen to your delicate cheek bones. The most difficult to wear – and to keep looking great all night long – is a super-shimmery, glitter filled pout. Feeling shy? You won’t be a wallflower with this wild and exciting look.
Less is more. On a serious note, if you are afraid of overdoing the sparkle, remember that less is more. The larger the pieces of glitter in the product are, the less you want to use. The softer the shimmer, the more product and the more space on your face you can cover. Keep the heaviest concentration of glitter to a minimum by wearing glittery eyeliner. Use the softest, sheerest iridescence on larger spaces, like your cheeks.
Temper the tinsel. If you are going for a heavy glittery eye, keep your lips subtle, with just a sheer gloss or a cranberry lip-stain. If you are wearing a super shiny lip, keep your eye color to a soft matte or a slightly shimmery nude shade. In most cases, you’ll want to match your metals. For instance, most of the time, it probably won’t turn out right to wear a gold and a silver eye shadow at the same time and a silvery eye probably won’t look right with gloss that contains gold flecks, either. Stick to one or the other, and you’ll know which one is right by the color jewelry you most often wear. If you love to wear gold rings and things, you’ll probably look stunning with a gold, shimmery shadow. But if silver is your favorite bling, stick to silver or gunmetal shades to enhance your skin tone.
When in doubt, try it out! Give yourself a chance to practice, and get the honest opinion of a fashionable friend. Don’t be afraid to wear your holiday look all season long – you’ll get it perfected and spread some holiday cheer everywhere you go.
