Find a good wife, find a good life. Proverbs of Solomon 18:22a
The price of a good life is the commitment to live it. December 29, 1989 was the day that ceremony confirmed what had happened in our hearts. That was the day Bonnie and I married two years after knowing each other. 23 years later, it was time to celebrate Bonnie by organizing a party she would never forget and her girlfriends would die for. Here’s how.
Step One of the Plan – Consult Your Wife
When you are ready to throw a party to celebrate your wife of more than 20 years, the first order of business is to consult her. This is not a surprise party. Tell her your thoughts. Tell her you want to honor her. Find out what she would like.
Ask what kind of setting she would like. Ask what kind of music she wants and food she would enjoy. Find out the guests she would favor. Explore her interests for a theme and colors. This is totally about her.
During planning, consider Jennifer Ramirez’s work, “How to genuinely and creatively celebrate your wife on Wife Appreciation Day.” Doug Flanders offers more in, “25 Ways to Show Your Wife You Love Her.”
Design Your Budget
Here is a simple budget to guide planning. First, establish budget range. Mine was set for $900 to $1,500. Second, I consulted friends who had experience with event planning. Third, I pursued costs for party rooms with dance floors, food service, music, and party favors that could be managed within the set budget range. Fourth, volunteers are necessary for setup, presentation, and clean up.
Consider the food service of major food chains or restaurants in your area. You don’t have to get everything in the same place. Shrimp Cocktail, Barbecued Chicken, and Barbecued Ribs are always enjoyed. Asian and Mexican dishes will compliment a diverse cultural presentation. Salads make great sides. Ice tea and flavored waters serve as beverages. The dessert should be a cake so beautiful and tasty; it will be reluctant to be cut. For food service for 50 people, budget $250 – $400 dollars.
Community centers and apartment complexes rent space for parties. Find space with room for round table setting for 50 people, food service area, refrigeration, dancing, and entertainment. Seek available space that provides necessary setup and cleanup time. For space rental, budget $200 – $350.
For table coverings, table ware, center pieces, and theme props; budget $200 – $350. For flowers, decorations, and party favors; budget $100 – $250. For entertainment, budget $50 for one performer and $100 for DJ. Total budget runs from $900 – $1500.
Design Special Activity
Choreograph a dance with your wife only the two of you will do. Follow with a slow dance where men will tap on each others shoulder for a moment to dance with and honor your wife. Let the first be your sons and then close friends to follow.
Spotlight your wife, her love and her accomplishments throughout the celebration. Share moments of your incredible journey. This is all about her. This is the moment you celebrate your wife of 20 Years with a party her girlfriends would die for. You are the man.
