Memories is what makes the holidays special. Use those memories to decorate your artificial Christmas tree this year. You can even use this idea to surprise a loved one and give it to them as a Christmas gift.
Luckily, you don’t have to be crafty to pull this magnificent Christmas tree decorating idea off. Although, it will look like you are!
Full of Memories Christmas Tree Idea
When the holidays roll around, it’s hard not to think of the past and how it used to be. Very few people don’t want to go back in time to those happy holiday memories. Sadly, we can’t, but we can bring a bit of it into our Christmas tree decorating.
You’ll only need a few items:
- decoupage
- 1 or 2 small sponge brushes
- copies of old photos from your past
- poster board, thin wood or other stiff backing for photos
- hole punch
- ribbon, raffia, torn fabric or metal ornament hooks
Depending on how small or large your artificial Christmas tree (or live tree) is will determine the size of the photo copies. You will have to be the judge of that for yourself as I am not there to help.
After you’ve copied the photos preferably an antique color instead of full color (black and white works well too), cut the poster board to fit the photo. Use any color poster board you like as long as it matches the other colors on your Christmas tree. For instance, if your tree will have red ornaments, use red poster board. Don’t pick orange or other color that won’t match. The decoupage will brighten up and make the photos shiny.
After the photos have dried, punch a hole in each one and add a ribbon. Hang the photos onto your Christmas tree limbs. Tie some large raffia bows (any color you choose) randomly onto the branches or even some torn fabric.
For the tree topper, copy a large photo, decoupage it, and place it near the top of the tree. Add a huge bow above it letting the tails of the bow flow over the branches below.
What Type of Photos Can Be Used?
If you are wondering what type of photos to use on your Christmas tree, anything will work as long as it is a memory. Here are some ideas you may like:
- grandpa’s first car
- grandma roller skating
- uncle George milking the cow
- aunt Vernie sweeping the porch
- great-grandma’s old school house
- old bicycles
- old wells
- old earrings, necklaces, or shoes
- the ice cream shop that was torn down years ago
- the old hang out
- old football uniforms
- anything that you can find!
Give As A Gift!
If you know someone who would love this Christmas tree decorating idea but can’t do it themselves, make the photo ornaments for them and wrap them up as an early Christmas gift! Elderly people love to relive memories from their childhood and this is a fabulous Christmas gift for them.
Tip: If photos are very large, poster board may bow. For larger photos, you will need a stronger back. I’ve used thin pieces of wood and it works perfectly!
