Let’s face it – The internet has changed over the years and we have been forced to constantly adapt. Software engineers are having to leave Visual Basic for other creative tools, and internet marketers must constantly adapt to Google’s constantly changing shadow of mysterious algorithms.
It’s no different with Facebook, except that it’s not just the scripts that are changing – it’s the community. As Facebook has grown, the children have grown up and some of them know more about technology than the ‘old school’ crowd does.
Advertisements are blocked by users, blurbs naturally ignored, and hiding posts is simple. This makes it difficult to promote your product(s) or service(s) on the large social network. If you’re struggling to find clients or customers on Facebook, you need to keep reading.
To the skeptical ones: I am not selling a product here.
Utilizing Memes, Trends and Society
While it may aggravate society’s key interpreters, it is well known that what’s hot is often more important than education, useful products and what many think should be intriguing. Use this to your advantage.
Here are some ways to utilize social trends in your business model.
- Integrate your product in the trends. While GroupOn got heat for their Super Bowl ad, it is not always bad to lower your professionalism enough to be respectable, but also interesting to the masses. This can easily be done by joking about yourself. For example, Coca Cola could have easily sparked a discussion about their inclusion of coca leaves that had traces of cocaine. This is now almost common knowledge, but years ago this could have been a great advertising opportunity.
- Utilize Facebook Groups. These groups, if interesting, can gain hundreds of likes and subscribers. Use these groups to enter your niche and gain an audience. Don’t talk about yourself or your company too much! They’ll start to ignore you.
- Ask Facebook what they think about a current event. Make sure you post this from your company/brand’s Facebook page!
The $7 Promotion
Facebook added the $7 promotion option, allowing you to pay $7 to bring your ‘posts’ to the top of your friends’ news feeds. Unfortunately, this pushes relevant and new content down the newsfeed, appearing below promoted posts. If you spend $7, you can get your promotional information noticed by a larger amount of people.
Simply make a new post, and click ‘Promote’. You’ll then be given more information and a payment option. This feature has been known to help freelancers interact with their clients, and find new clients easily.
Word of Mouth
Simply use word of mouth if you’d like to build up your brand recognition. Speak with your friends, family and even coworkers. If someone does not know of an upcoming service offer, they will not tell someone about it no matter how relevant it may be to a future conversation. However, if you let them know, there’s a chance they’ll share it on with someone at a later date.
Just so you know – I’ve made a few hundred dollars this month from my freelance work. Every single new client this month came because of their friends recommending my services.
These are only three methods, but they honestly can be more effective than ‘sidebar ads’. Sidebar ads are commonly ignored, and often blocked by techy users of the social network. If you implement yourself, your company and services into society’s trends and discussions though, you will succeed.
Good luck with your business, and hopefully this helps!
