When starting out in Magic and mentalism it can be very difficult to know when you feel ready to perform in front of an audience (especially since mentalism relies totally on performance and not props). Confidence can be something that holds us back so I have written this guide to help and hopefully after following this guide you should be able to learn to be confident to perform over time. I know it can be very frustrating when learning new magic tricks, for me I just wanted to perform straight away but my confidence held me back. We question ourselves all the time, and doubt our own confidence and when it comes to performing this can be something that really gets in the way.
Recognize your talents. Are you the type of person who can interact with groups at ease, or do you struggle to with social gatherings to make yourself known? We all have talents in some way or another and you need to recognize what these are, once you understand what these our. Give yourself some credit and concentrate on what you excel at, if you focus your attention on your good points you will quickly realize that your confidence will start to show through.
Practice in front of a mirror. Practising in front of a mirror will let you view the performance from the audience’s perspective. This will give you a much better insight as to whether the trick looks professional enough and how you look when performing the trick. When it comes to magic and mentalism, the one thing that holds us back is the feeling of something going wrong “will I make a mistake and mess the trick up.” While ever you have these thoughts running through your mind, you will not be ready to perform your trick infront of spectators. you need to be 100 percent sure that you the trick won’t go wrong. Attempting to perform in front of an audience when you are still perfecting the trick is setting yourself up for a big fall.
Demonstrate your performance to family or friends. Before you decide to go out performing at parties or on the streets, Practice in front of close family and friends, Let’s face it if you feel uneasy and nervous showing your tricks to family then think how you would feel demonstrating your trick to strangers. I found when starting out that the encouragement my family gave me and the positive feedback I got after performing filled me with confidence and made me believe a lot more in my abilities. Start by just practicing in front of one family member and then slowly build up to performing in front of the whole family at family gatherings. You would be amazed at how quickly your confidence grows through small steps like these.
Mentalism; and Magic can be very nerve racking at first, we as human beings all suffer fear. Do not feel disheartened if the idea of ever performing in front of people seems scary, this is normal, just follow the steps above, take your time and remember practice, practice, practice!
