They moan and complain, because they think chores are really the most difficult part of their day. Unfortunately kids don’t realize how good they have it. The chores that they do today are nothing when compared to the chores that had to be done years ago. Think back to the “Little House on the Prairie”, time period. I know most know all about this show and the books. Well during those days they did not have the luxury items we have today for cleaning. For example a dishwasher was a person washing dishes by hand, not a machine. This summer why not spend a little time each day educating your kids on how easy cleaning and even cooking today really is. Below you will find a few examples, for a lesson your children are sure to remember.
Wash clothes by hand
Nowadays we have the nice luxury of washing machines and dryers. Even if you don’t have a machine in your home, there are locations that you can travel to in order to get things washed and dried. Explain to your kids that years ago before washing machines, clothes were washed by hand, (using a washboard in some cases). You don’t need a washboard for this project, but you can help your children learn how much work this really is. Start by filling a large or medium bucket in the yard with soap and water. Then fill another bucket with no soap just water for rinsing. Pick a few small cleaning rags for your kids to wash out. For younger kids you can work with them. While working to clean the items explain to them how much work this must have been if you had to do the entire families laundry. When done washing the items you can hang them to dry. The point of this particular project is to help them understand when you ask them to put their clothes in the washing machine, with detergent, and then place in the dryer it’s a lot less work, than what it used to be. Maybe then they will realize that doing the laundry is not so bad after all.
Cooking dinner from scratch
Cooking is usually a lot of fun for kids of any age, especially when they are cooking along side mom. During this part, you can make up a list of recipes you will cook. Perhaps you can make one meal a week an old fashioned meal with limited supplies. Mention to your children the fact that we have a lot of modern conveniences they did not have back then. You can have the kids help you prepare a basic meal from scratch using only ingredients they would have had back then. When you go to the supermarket you can talk about how many people used to get their food before they invested supermarkets. Some of this may require a little bit of research on your part but it will be well worth the effort in the end.
Make your own clothes
Many kids don’t appreciate the luxury of being able to walk into a clothing store and purchase the items you want. Years ago you had to make your own clothes from material that you purchased. So why not go to your local fabric store and purchase some material. Pick one clothing item to work on. A small shirt or dress for girls is a good project to start with.
Wash the floor without the mop
Do your kids know what it is like to scrub the kitchen floor using a bucket of soapy water and a sponge? Well before they had mops or the wet swifer this is what was done. Why not have them help you give the floor a good cleaning. Then maybe when you ask them to mop or swifter the floor, they will not moan and groan so much.
