It is said that Smell is our strongest sense. It is the sense that is more close to our brain neuron reactions. This means that we can recall things easier when we have their smell. A lot of people might want to improve this sense and this is what this article is written for. I will show you some great tips to improve your sense of Smell (for whatever reason you may want to improve it). They can be applied immediately. Enjoy reading.-
It is a fact that the more you use your senses, the better you get at it.-
Same applies with Smell. What you should do is pay more attention to what you already smell. Have you ever tried to describe smells? How about writing your observations on paper for later use? So, first step in order to improve your smell is to start with what you already smell.
You can find a person to help you and play the well known game where you try to recognize things, foods etc. by their smell while you are blind-folded.
Pay attention to what you feel when smelling.
The Smell sensors are directly connected to your emotional brain. For example when you smell certain things e.g. fresh bread it increases the level of attention (and decrease irritability). Other cents like cinnamon or peppermint are known to improve the ability to meditate and/or visualize.
The scent of fresh lemon or pure coffee clears your brain from negative thoughts and promotes high concentration levels.
Stay away from foods causing excess mucus!
When you have a cold and the mucus production is increased you must have noticed that your sense of Smell fades or in some cases it is totally lost! This is because the smell-sensitive nerves become congested.
In order to avoid this do not eat foods that promote mucus production (e.g. dairy products, ice cream etc). I know, I know. It’s stuff you like but at least avoid these foods while you are experimenting with your sense of Smell or while you have the cold.
Do not smoke, drink or consume substances that affect your Smell.
If you are a regular smoker (you might not know this) it is likely that you have very reduced ability of identifying smells. Heavy smokers completely eliminate this sense say the scientists! Alcohol also messes things up while its levels rise in your blood.
So, when trying to improve your smell you should keep alcohol to a minimum, you should not consume tobacco products at all (if possible), you should stay away from illegal drugs. Also the FDA reported that some cold remedies have caused a total loss of the sense of smell, so be careful with those chemical anti-cold drugs. I don’t know about you but I search for an alternative or natural remedy first before I turn to chem-drugs.
Eat the rights foods to improve your Smell.
There is a mineral called Zinc. When the levels of this precious mineral are high in our body, then our sense of Smell becomes much stronger. So, say medical researchers. Did you know there is a medical condition (with an ancient Greek name) for impaired Smell? Yes! It is called “Hyposmia” and scientists have found that it is caused when the levels of Zinc mineral drop in our body.
As you can imagine, all we have to do to resolve this is eat foods rich in this precious mineral (e.g. walnuts, sunflower seeds, oysters etc). So, eat those foods when you are after perfecting your sense of Smell.
Step 6: Use an air moisturizer (also called humidifier).
This is a great way to increase your smelling abilities because moisture will be high in your nose and the nose membranes/cells will open widely. Thus, you will be able to smell more clearly. If you live in a dry place then a humidifier will also improve the overall energy of the house/place.
When you learn to identify scents you will notice how important the sense of Smell is in your every day life. It is not by luck that Smell is the sense that is closer to the brain nerve reactions than any other sense. We remember things very easily when we have their scent.
It is a scientific fact! I hope that in this article, you have found lots of tips and ideas that can be applied immediately and be measured easily so as to become a real odor expert!
I have also written other articles on how to improve your smelling abilities . See my writer’s profile .
