If your child is a fan of big-eyed monsters from a popular family movie, they likely have all sorts of character-themed toys and memorabilia. Their bedroom might also be decked out with loveable monster-themed bedding and decor. It does not have to come from a store to look spectacular, and it does not require an official seal to make a monstrous impression. Forget about expensive brands. You can create a monster wreath for your child’s bedroom door unlike anything available in stores. It can serve double-duty as a special medal to ward off monsters and as a delightful door decoration.
To make a loveable purple monster wreath with big bulging eyes you will need a 14″ circular foam form, two skeins of Lion brand Fun Fur yarn in grape, 12 yellow ping pong balls, a hot glue gun with glue sticks and a black permanent marker with a pointed tip. To create perfect circles for the eyes, you will also need a flexible ½” round stencil, an egg carton and a sharp pencil. A piece of wire can be used for hanging the finished movie monster door decoration. A twist tie from a bread bag will work fine for the lightweight project.
Begin by tying one end of the Fun Fur yarn to the foam wreath. Wrap it around and around until the entire skein entirely covers half of the circular form. Tie on the second skein of yarn, and wrap it around to cover the other half. Securely knot the ends. Fluff up the Fun Fur yarn with your hand, and make any necessary adjustments.
Next, use the pencil, a stencil and the yellow ping pong balls to make the bulging eyes. Fill in the circles with black permanent marker, and place them in the egg carton one by one to dry. Using the hot glue gun, attach the finished eyeballs to the fluffy purple wreath. They should be evenly spaced across the surface. Attach a wire or twist tie to the back, and hang it from a wreath hook on your child’s bedroom door.
Keeping Monsters Away
If you child is afraid of monsters and other things that go bump in the night, tell him or her that the new wreath will keep them away. Arm them with a spray-bottle that contains about an ounce of water and two drops of lavender essential oil. Label it with the words, Monster Spray. With the door decoration and the fragrant spray, they will be able to safely keep the monsters at bay.
