How to Make a Word Girl Costume

by fat vox

Recently, my daughter’s cheerleading team participated in a team-building activity in which they were each asked to dress up in a super hero costume. Instead of choosing one of the more famous super heroes, my daughter decided to be a little unique and selected Word Girl as her super hero. I was delighted with her novel choice and in just a few hours, I managed to create a prize-winning costume for her.

I began by scrutinizing Word Girl images I found online and making a list of items I would need.

MATERIALS:

  • · 1 red shirt
  • · 1 pair of red leggings
  • · A scrap of red felt
  • · 3 yards of yellow material
  • · Yellow ribbon

TOOLS:

  • · Scissors
  • · Glue stick (gel)
  • · Straight edge
  • · Copy paper
  • · Pencil
  • · Eraser
  • · Safety pins

OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES:

  • · Brown boots
  • · Brown gloves
  • · Brown belt
  • · Stuffed monkey

The tools and optional accessories were items I already had at home and I was able to purchase all of the items on the materials list for about $21.00 at a local “mart” store.

THE SHIELD AND STAR:

Using one of the pictures I found online for reference, I sketched Word Girl’s shield and star design on a piece of plain copy paper. I cut out the shield and star to make a template and placed the template on a section of the yellow material. I traced around the template to transfer the design to the material and then carefully cut out the design. I used the gel glue stick to adhere the shield to the front of the red shirt.

THE CAPE:

For the cape, I draped the remaining yellow material over my daughter’s shoulders to determine the appropriate length and simply cut off the excess fabric. I cut two pieces of yellow ribbon and pinned them to the top edge of the cape about shoulder width apart and tied them in a bow under her chin.

THE CAP:

The cap was the hardest part for me. If you have any crafting or sewing experience you may have a simple pattern for a cap but I had to wing it here. After a few failed attempts, I ended up cutting a large half circle of red felt. I placed this on my daughter’s head with the curved edge to the front and used a safety pin to pin the corners under her chin. I folded the material at the top front of the cap to make it fit closer to her head and used another safety pin to secure the fold.

FINISHING TOUCHES:

I added boots, gloves, a belt, and a stuffed animal monkey to complete the look of this affordable, easy-to-assemble Word Girl costume. Worrrrrrd UP!
