Do you ever dare to be unique, innovative and quite possibly even a little mad with articles of home decor so omnipresent that they have become a cliche? It is more than possible to take a home decor idea you see all around you and put your own stamp on it. Create your own works of art that don’t just call attention to themselves, but scream out in a high girlish voice, “Hey, look at me! I’m not just a wall anymore, I’m a unique work of art.”
For instance, let’s take clocks. Walk into any home decor store and browse long enough and eventually you will reach a place that feels like you just dropped into a Dali-esque nightmare. Clocks are here to stay as a superstar player on the home decor dream team, but I would prefer to do something a little off-the-wall with this signature piece of on-the-wall interior decoration.
If I really wanted to get creative by putting a clock on the wall, well, I just wouldn’t be satisfied with merely a clock on the wall. I’d rather go the extra mile and do something a little crazy like making the wall into a clock. So instead of a clock on the wall as just another exhibition of home decor, I’d put the wall into a clock.
How? Well, to start with, I would find the biggest numbers I could find to hang in a clock design on the wall. You could hit flea markets, thrift stores, junk yards or even home decor stores. Or you could make the big clock numbers a DIY project that gives you more far control over the look and feel.
Now what? Well, here’s where this little entry into the creative world of home decor gets interesting. Clocks as a centerpiece of wall art range from the mostly functional to the outlandishly ornamental. You could stop just with putting the numbers on the wall. In fact, you wouldn’t even need to add anything else to make it a great-looking piece of minimalist wall decor. Or you could put in some extra work to create a design around the numbers that makes it more realistic.
Then there’s the options for actually making a working clock. It wouldn’t take much know-how to turn this into a DIY project in which you install a motorized pair of giant hands that really does make the wall an enormous working clock. But guess what? Pure ornamentation and working timepiece are not the limits to the possibilities here.
Forget the motorized hands and instead put up adjustable clock hands. Now you’ve got a wall that is a stunningly dramatic piece of wall art, but also transforms when needed into a reminder impossible to ignore. Adjust the hands of your giant wall clock to remind you when it’s time to pick up the kids from soccer or when that movie comes on cable only airs twice a year instead of fifteen times every month.
