Nowadays in fashion there is a really thin line between what is ugly and what is cute, what is so ugly it’s oddly cute, and what is plain ugly. With the rise of the “Ugly Holiday Sweater Party” we have been challenged to understand this complicated fashion trend. After all, if you are headed to a party with a bunch of friends you don’t want to appear ugly.
But isn’t the point of an “Ugly Holiday Sweater Party” to wear something that makes us look ugly, therefore contributing to the humor of the whole gathering? Yes and No. Yes, the point of the party is to wear something that our culture would normally deem “tacky” or “ugly.” But no, we still want to look good doing it. Here are a few tips on how you can pull it off:
Go the authentic, tacky route. Buy a Christmas sweater complete with stitching, patches, and bells.
Find a sweater that normally only your grandma would be caught wearing. The best place to find these are in the Misses section of a department store (such as Kohl’s, J.C. Penney, and Macy’s) or at your local thrift store. You may also go the less authentic route and buy an “ugly holiday sweatshirt” instead. These are made with cotton and fleece, and usually have a graphic of a cardinal in the snow or a snowman sledding down a hill. The best way to accessorize an authentic, tacky sweater is with more tacky accessories. I always pair mine with either candy cane or Santa hat earrings. You can also add a tacky holiday pin to the sweater if it is on the plain side. These can be found at either department stores or accessory stores such as Claire’s or Icing. Finally, I usually pair my authentic, tacky holiday sweater with a black pencil skirt, tights, and a cute pair of boots!
Buy a more modern Christmas sweater & dress it up or down.
With the rise of the “Ugly Holiday Sweater Party” many popular stores have begun to make their own version of the holiday sweater. Stores such as Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe often have ones that feature cartoon characters. These sweaters have a much better fit, and are easy to accessorize like a normal outfit. On the other hand, stores like American Eagle make “Fair Isle” patterned sweaters that have a holiday look to them. I’ve noticed that a lot of people will wear these sweaters to “Ugly Holiday Sweater Parties” because they are also acceptable to wear throughout the winter and are therefore more useful. These sweaters are very easy to dress up or down. You can pair the sweater with dark blue skinny jeans, casual boots, and stud earrings or can add a black pencil skirt, pearls, and heels. Either way you can make the so-called “ugly sweater” look oddly cute!
