Immigrants who have lived in the UK for a certain length of time and who wish to settle permanently without becoming a British citizen can do so once they have been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Once Indefinite Leave to Remain is granted, the applicant can reside permanently within the UK and enjoy most of the same rights, privileges and benefits as British citizens. If you are getting ready to file form SET (M) what should you do to prepare?
Read the Guidance Notes
There are 13 pages of guidance notes to help applicants complete form SET (M). To help prepare for filing, print off the guidance notes and read them through thoroughly before completing the application. On a separate sheet of paper, take notes to help guide you through the application process.
Once you are thoroughly acquainted with the requirements, you can move ahead by completing the application form.
Prepare Supporting Documentation
When you are getting ready to file form SET (M) you will need to provide documentation to support your application. For example, if you are applying as the spouse of a British citizen you will need to provide two year’s worth of letters in joint names that have been sent to your home address. These include bank statements, gas/electricity bills, water rates, council tax correspondence, and so on.
Prepare a separate folder for supporting documentation. As a letter comes through, file it away in the folder, ready for when you are going to file form SET (M). This will make things easier later on, as you will not be searching high and low for letters you can use for your application.
Take Your Time
Filing form SET (M) is very involved and time-consuming. Applicants should be fully aware of when their visa is about to expire. If you are not sure when your visa is about to expire check the vignette in your passport and make a note of it. This will allow you plenty of time to collect documents, complete the form and have everything in place when you apply by post or do so in person at a public enquiry office.
Prepare as a Couple
Immigrants who are getting ready to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain as the spouse of a British citizen should prepare as a couple for the change in their status. If you are applying in person, your spouse should accompany you to the interview at the public enquiry office. Spouses who are unable to attend must submit a letter stating the reasons for their absence.
Advance preparation will stand you in good stead as you prepare to file form SET (M). Start off by reading the guidance notes associated with form SET (M), as these will offer important information on what is required of you and what you should do next. Take your time and make sure you have everything you need to proceed with your application.
