Pentacryl or other wood preservative
Have you seen the many things that are being made with wood slices? The slabs are being turned into gorgeous tables, game boards, wall hangings, and so much more. If you have a branch that has fallen – or even a whole tree – and you have a way to saw it, you can turn those slabs of wood into the most stunning of all home decorator items. Cut small circles of a branch to make coasters, or huge circles to make tables, but no matter what sizes the slabs are, you’ll need to preserve them. Many people think that the process is difficult but it isn’t at all.
It’s necessary to preserve wood slices in a particular way or the wood will crack. As it dries, and loses all moisture, cracks will form across the wood. To prevent that from happening, treat it yourself, and you’ll have all of the wood slabs that you could possibly use.
Many wood circles have a bark ring around them; it’s a beautiful look. To keep the bark on the slabs that you cut you’ll need to cut them in the winter. Before applying a product to preserve the wood, bring it in from outside, and allow it to come to room temperature.
Look at a home improvement store for a product such as Pentacryl wood preservative. The product is made as a soak for the wood; you’ll need to soak the slab for five minutes per each inch of thickness. A disposable pan or bowl is perfect for soaking the wood and for using such a strong chemical. After soaking, dry the wood naturally; don’t use a fan or heat source to speed-dry the piece. Don’t set the piece outside in the sun. As the wood dries, turn it this way and that, to ensure that it’s drying on all sides. It can take a couple of days for the wood to completely dry.
Preserving your own wood gives you a way to cut up fallen trees and actually use the wood for something other than your fireplace. Many stunning crafts are made from wood slices and, if you shop at a craft or home improvement store, those slices are not cheap. You’ll have all of the wood slabs that you need, though, so set aside a good bit of time for crafting with them.
