H-E-B is a great place to stock up on inexpensive, quality groceries. I have been shopping at H-E-B for years, and I have figured out a few ways to save money on my grocery bill. I often can save anywhere from 20 to 40 percent off my already low bill implementing a few easy tricks. Follow these steps to save money at H-E-B next time you shop.
Check out your store’s ad online
H-E-B store sales can occasionally vary from store to store, even in the same region. It is important that you check your store’s sales on the H-E-B website to see exactly what is on sale. New sales go up early Wednesday morning.
Look for Combo Locos you’d like to participate in
One of the best discounts you can take advantage of at H-E-B is a Combo Loco. A Combo Loco is an in-store deal where you buy one or more items to get one or more items free. Often times the item(s) you purchase are less expensive than the item(s) you get for free. For example, I was able to get a free bag of frozen meatballs this week after buying a small container of Parmesan cheese.
H-E-B offers a half dozen or so Combo Locos every week, and you don’t need to take advantage of every one. I pick the ones that include things my family will eat or items I was thinking about trying.
All you need to do to take advantage of a Combo Loco is to find the items in the store and find the yellow in-store coupon for the deal. Combo Locos are never very difficult to find, and they are often featured at the end of aisles. If you need help, ask an employee to help you get your Combo together.
Look for H-E-B printable coupons
H-E-B has its own printable coupons on its website, and I recommend checking them out before you shop. Sometimes these coupons are for amazing offers. For example, I used a $3 off $3 worth of produce coupon this summer.
Make coupon match ups
One excellent way to maximize your discount at H-E-B is to match coupons you have with sale items. H-E-B often puts items on sale that also have coupons floating around online, in newspapers, or even in their stores. You can figure out these match ups yourself by looking through your coupon collection and seeing what happens to be on sale.
I like to also read Saving With Shellie to see what coupon match ups can be found at H-E-B at any given week. Shellie usually finds a few discounts I didn’t notice, and she has the scoop on what coupons can be found inside your H-E-B store.
Find out what meat and produce is on sale
Meat and produce usually don’t have coupons available, but H-E-B has good sales on both every week. I look to see what is on sale and add it to my list. Almost everything goes on sale pretty quickly, so if I have a craving, I will wait a few weeks and snatch it up at a good price.
Walk around every aisle of the store you shop for extra sales and coupons
Even if you’ve done your research before going to H-E-B, you’ll probably be in for a few nice surprises on your shopping trip. H-E-B often has unpublished sales on some items as well as yellow printed out manufacturers coupons for you to use. These coupons tend to either be at the front of the store or next to each item they are for.
If you have some extra time, just walk around looking for sales and coupons. In my experience, some of the best deals are found this way. For example, I found one pound bags of pasta on sale this summer for sixty-five cents each.
Check your receipt for savings and more coupons
Once you’re done with your trip, check your receipt to see how much you have saved. Also look at any coupons included with or on the back of your receipt. These coupons can be highly targeted and high value. I got a $1.50 off Gardenburger coupon last week with my receipt, and I regularly get other coupons for products I like.
