I’m the guy that drives from Pigeon Forge to Sevierville to buy the cheapest gas. $1.50 vs $1.60 gas didn’t make a huge difference, but it’s 2014 and $3 vs $3.50 hurts the wallet. We purchased a 2013 Toyota Prius V which saves gas, but for a hefty price. In addition, we have a Nissan Titan, 2013 Can Am RTS-SE5 and small engines for the yard, so I constantly keep an eye on gas prices when passing gas stations and loyalty reward programs.
Kroger and Food City Discount Gas Cards
Chances are you’re not driving a hybrid and gas prices kill a budget. Kroger was my go to place if I didn’t have a discount with Food City or other gas prices were higher. Kroger consistently offers lower prices in town, has $.03 off with a Kroger’s Plus Card and $.10 off with a $100 in purchases. I don’t believe points expire and incentives like double points on Kroger brands help rewards add up. Kroger’s a great store and across from Home Depot and Lowe’s which I visit often.
Food City is a store I shop often for one or two items, but unless you are shopping specials or know the coupon schedule I feel cost more for groceries. The Food City Reward Program doesn’t offer a regular discount for loyal customers and the points expire monthly, so for light spenders usually won’t add up fast enough to use. I have written Food City about the Fuel Bucks program and my dislike of expiring points. Food City didn’t change the expiration portion, but completely altered the rest of the Fuel Bucks rewards program including $.15 off a gallon for 150 points up to $.30 off for 300 points. Food City now has mega reward items, double points on Wednesdays and other incentives found on the Fuel Bucks Rewards page. If I spent as much at Food City as Wal-Mart (Hint, Hint Wal-Mart) then I would probably save extra on all my fuel purchases.
Note: Both Kroger’s and Food City have a 20 gallon limit on discounted fuel
Murphy’s Express and Murphy USA Gas Credit Cards
Recently built is a huge Murphy’s Express in Sevierville, TN. It’s a nice gas station, but like Exxon Mobil the rewards program is a Credit Card not a loyalty card meaning you probably won’t be approved without great a credit score. Additionally, Murphy’s Credit Card only offers $.04 off a gallon, but being a credit card can be used anywhere for 1% cash back on purchases.
Note: If you can qualify for a credit card I would suggest Bank of America’s 123 Rewards Card (3% on gas, 2% on groceries, 1% on everything else) I have this card and like it. Next, an Exxon Mobil Credit Card saves $.06 a gallon, but you have to purchase at least 45 gallons a month (more than I use) and they have a lot more locations. Exxon Mobil use to offer better incentives on their credit card.
Weigel’s Club Member Rewards Card: Setting Up a Weigel’s Preferred Payment Debit Card
Lucky for me Weigel’s opened a large brand new gas station close to home and recently started the Weigel’s Club Card Program. I had a Weigel’s Reward Card and noticed the Club Card price for $.10 off a gallon. Realizing the reward card didn’t work, I asked the cashier who explained Weigel’s Reward and Weigel’s Club Card differences. If you register a Weigel’s Club Members Card you get $.10 off a gallon any time, all grades, no purchase required or limits on gallons of gas.
Setting Up a Weigel’s Club Members Debit Card
This is Weigel’s version of a cash discount used in areas of Florida and other states. There are a couple of steps to take before you start saving with the Weigel’s Club Members Card.
1- You must have a checking account.
2- Visit a Weigel’s gas station and ask for a Weigel’s Club Card (not a Reward’s Card)
3- Visit Weigels.com to register your Weigel’s Preferred Payment Club Card. You can apply by mail if you somehow live without internet.
4- Wait for a debit and deposit from National Payment Card to your checking account. Then enter the amounts in a verification email you will receive.
Note: Mine appeared as PREAUTHPMT NATL PAY CARD VE SHAJ FORREST CHURCHILL ACH DEBIT in the amount of .04 and .01 (It took several days before both amounts appeared on my checking account)
5- You can now use your Weigel’s Preferred Payment Club Card at the pump. One nice feature is National Payment Card will send an email every time the card is used with the amount and location. This reminds me to update my checkbook before deleting the email.
Weigel’s Club Card, Reward’s Card and Pump Start Card offer deals for free Weigel’s milk, Sunkist, Neuro Fuel and let you track Loyalty Rewards online. The Weigel’s Club Card can be used as a debit card for purchases made inside the store also.
Please comment if you know about a great loyalty reward program. I would love to hear about them.
